Thailand reports 7,526 new COVID-19 cases

Thailand on Friday (January 7) reported 7,526 new COVID-19 cases, 2,895 recoveries and 19 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 7,487. Prisons: 39

▶︎ Recoveries: 2,895

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,223,913

▶︎ Total recoveries since April 1: 2,160,971

 

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,252,776 with 21,799 deaths.

 

The news comes as the first 1.3 million, of the 3.7 million doses of the Moderna mRNA vaccine set to be delivered in  January, arrived in Thailand today (Thursday), with the balance to be delivered by the end of the month.

 

Ordered by the Private Hospital Association through the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO), the rest of the order will arrive in two lots, 870,000 million doses this Saturday and 1.53 million doses on January 17th.

 

A total of 5.6 million doses have been ordered, with almost 1.9 million having been delivered to date. The first lot arrived on November 1st.

156 of those in 1 day from arrivals, thats a huge number which would also not include those at high risk who sat near/next to them! Plenty of rooms needed in Phuket for Hospitels........

Just saw the numbers posted on the news,  There is quite a jump upwards, ut then this is just from PCR tests and without the ATK tests added in.  I think that with testing at home being available many of the positive ATK test results may never be reported unles the person truly needs assistance and goes to a hospital where a PCR test is given.  How many of the ATK tests that do get posted are then followed up with a PCR test and then those positives counted either the next day or days after.  It is a vicious cycle.  In the US most of the ATK tests are not being performed at home but in facilities where those positives are then counted in the total case loads.  

 

With the New Years Holiday only 6 days past and people just returning this week, I think we will not see the true spread for about another 14 days and then hopefully we see the peak as many other countries are seeing after about 30 days before the numbers start to fall.  It is a rapid spike upwards and yes we can use that word "Exponential" now.

Even though we are still seeing many deaths those numbers are trending downward even with the mass of Omicron cases in the world.

Not true David, not true. The tests may be less sensitive to Omicron because it starts in the throat area first before moving up to the nasal cavities.  The Saliva tests are finding it before the nasal ATK tests as a friend found out, which I posted about yesterday.

It took three days, on average, for people to test positive on the two rapid antigen tests after their first positive PCR result, researchers reported. In four cases, people transmitted the virus to others after a negative result, according to the study, which hasn't yet been peer-reviewed.

 

It is not yet clear whether the infections were missed because the antigen tests are inherently less sensitive to Omicron or because saliva tests may be better at detecting the new variant, The New York Times reported.

Using saliva samples or throat swabs might be one way around the problem. A December study from researchers in South Africa said that saliva swabs should be the “preferred sample”

Isn't it obvious that the easily transmittable Omicron will result in a massive uptick in infections? I have two colleagues self-isolating after positive ATK tests, but presumably people like them are not included in the numbers. There must be thousands more like that.

 

Fortunately, the symptoms are negligible.

Ouch! Once again, Pattaya clocks up around 10% of the total number of cases in the whole country, with less than 0.5% of the population. It seems that the long New Year holiday with many thousands of people visiting from outside didn't do the place any favours at all. Though since the mayor has dropped his "Neo Pattaya" rebranding scheme, maybe he can try a new one npw: "Pattaya - at the forefront of Covid!" lol.

UPDATE: 7,526 confirmed cases, 2,244 probable cases (ATK), and 19 deaths (0.97%). Out of 42,580 patients , 23,214 are in hospital, 17,543 in hospitel and 1,072 in home/community isolation. There are 547 in a serious condition (+11) with 140 on ventilators (-6) #Thailand

The above statement is false!

 

All public testing in the US is PCR.

 

Please tell us what State, County or City is using rapid testing.

 

You can buy rapid testing from any pharmacy or amazon and use it at home, Airlines recommends guided tests that you can use for travel that are recommended by the CDC to make it easier to test for entry into the US.

Guided rapid testing are also used for events.

Sometimes the problem is not with the tests but with how they are used. Swabbing nasal passages is just not enough, must do throat as well. Lots of posts on Twitter about this from those who are definitely positive, but get a negative ATK if just doin nasal swab

Surely the 7295 represents only those cases admitted ? Otherwise, statistically , it's of no value publishing this figure alongside the number "released" 2895.

So that may mean the actual numbers are higher compared to the last wave, plus factor in the lower testing rate than say, UK, and the true number could be much higher.  And yet serious illnesses seems to be less, so perhaps no need to panic.

True. But many of those with Omicron say the symptoms are like a cold, which is why they're not reporting it, but just (hopefully) self-isolating.

Plus I have heard many say the symptoms were far worse, or many say even less severe than a cold.....too many variables here. Many certainly fear reporting or even testing their cold symptoms... who wants to be quarantined in a crappy Government hospital enduring awful food and having to pay!
