The funny thing about Omicron is, if you catch it you can catch it again and again. I wonder how many times I caught a cold?

Lockdowns kill far more than covid. Sweden, which famously did not lockdown, had the lowest rate of excess deaths in Europe last year. Statistics Canada reported that after the initial wave in spring 2020, lockdowns caused more deaths than covid due to suicides, drug od, untreated cancers etc.

Antarctica had an outbreak despite quarantines, 100% vax and multiple PCR tests.  Avoiding contact with others might help but all other measures are just theater.

That say all the world's a stage?

Thailand was finally getting tough with the Omicron variant with orders issued by the prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Wonder how much longer Thailand has got to put up with this doddery old dinosaur stealing oxygen. Depressing.

This is thai military thinking (although 'thinking' may be the wrong word): I order  so it is done by my underlings. They'll never understand society: they're in a cocoon

Now cases are surging in Thailand

You can't control what you can't control, so just let it run it's course so we can all get on with our lives, they ones who fall by the wayside would have anyway, as cruel as that may sound, but that is the reality.

People in the meantime should adhere to what measures they can to avoid catching/spreading the virus, but at the end of the day, we are all in for a dose of it, and can't agree about the way they are going on about it personally.

Whatever you do, don't drink alcohol.....lol

Wonder if the general will order a financial support package for all those effected ????

What next, will the police be tasked with controlling the common cold? Don't panic, my dears.

Isn't  it obvious  to the world that they left it open to make money at the busy season?  Isn't  it obvious to the world that its too late to attempt to put a finger in the damn?  The only thing that worked and showed that it worked,  was a strict lockdown.  This is an annual cycle now.  The local  business  say dont lock down, we need the money!  Almost, like they only want the money and not worry about people getting infected.   In fairness though 80% of cases in Thailand  are Delta, not many are fatal from the Omicron.

I'm a bit rubbish at geography so I've no idea which country the one is in yellow, but I am sure that they must have had the strictest of lockdowns to get an outcome like they did.  Anyone know which country it is?

Many have said Thailand was slow to react because of a lack of testing despite the fact that Omicron soon showed up in the kingdom.

It wasn't slow... it wanted a few baht in the till over the New Year.

That little profit will soon be swallowed up with the huge health care cost.

Very sad.

What's actually very sad is  narrow minded people making nonsense comments simply because they are unable to grasp the big picture. People who don't grasp that the police are 100% justified in what they are actually trying to do - prevent the spread of covid and to contain existing outbreaks. Very sad when people  cannot grasp that the government is not doing this without regard to economic consequences, but simply doing everything, no stone unturned, that can and must be done for the sake of public health. What's sad is that the government and police have every right, moral and legal, to exercise their own judgment as to what needs to be done. I think statements such as yours are not even fully honest - I think you don't like that your own access, and that of your buddies,  to open bars and alcohol consumption are restricted. I hear such habitual drinkers in my apartment continuously whining about not being able to go out on their drinking binges, and these guys are not suffering economically. They are simply selfish. I come from a country which has seen 700,000+ deaths from covid, and would love to have seen identical measures enforced, which would have prevented those deaths. No doubt this is an economic hardship, but that is partly because so many businesses in Thailand depend on the spending of tourists and drinkers. This is simply an unfortunate reality and not something you can blame on the government. But since blaming and ridiculing the Thai government is popular sport among commenters, it's a sad irony that those very complainers are actually safer for the actions of the police and government. So that is what's "very sad" .

Learn to live with it.
Example:
During the New Year holidays hold a sales promotion like "Buy 1 pair of N*k* - get 2 pairs for free"
After your shop was crowded with customers several days and your staff was working OT you get a call that some of your customers tested positive.
Learned what?
Send your staff for testing 3 days after the call while you count your money.
No BS, happened in CM.

"TRYING" to stop the spread of Omicron is like trying to catch flies with chicken wire.

Meanwhile the rest of the world is taking a sensible approach and educating the people how to live with it and take care of themselves. When the tourist industry in Thailand is decimated for the next 5 -10 years who will the Government blame. They will not accept the responsibility.

Police enforcement of laws in police bars..

I would like to see that.

Jonathon Smith omitted one similarity between the 700,000 deaths in his country and the current situation in Thailand. THE ABILITY of the person running the country to tell the truth and know how to Manage the PROBLEMS.

If he's from the UK I'd say that both leaders are just as bad as each other. Not sure about the US, possibly the same...

Police ordered to enforce the law, now.

Amazing.

That because the Thai police know exactly that the Covid will comes active after 9pm.

When do these numb nuts understand that there is no stopping a virus like COVID ????

Some people have their intelligence taken by spoon.....

not read all replies , but AFAIK, theres no requirement for restaurants or those masquerading to be so,  to "close" at 9pm

however, they must stop serving alcohol at 9pm

i know several places where regular drinkers will order 3 drinks for themselves at 20.55

More panic from the Muppet in chief, knee jerk reaction yet again.

Unfortunately for the dumb in charge the virus cannot be stopped because it doesn't listen or understand mumbo jumbo from anyone, whether it be the BiB, certificates, licences or the government.

Another article in the Lancet...

Many critical voices have been raised about Sweden's national response to COVID-19 and its failure to achieve its objectives to flatten and shorten the curves of cases, hospitalisations, and deaths

I've attempted to put myself in the position of someone albeit single or with a family reading Thai news over the past few weeks whilst trying to make my mind up if it's worth the trouble booking a holiday there?

The answer is a emphatic,  no I won't bother certainly this year maybe next.

I’ve now ceased to be amazed at the vacuous nature and lack of critical thinking existing in the Thai ????. Hanlon’s razor combined with the "Thick Gene" explains most of it.
