Thailand on Friday (March 4) reported 23,834 new COVID-19 cases, 19,351 recoveries and 54 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,918,996 with 23,124 deaths.

 

The news comes as Thailand’s daily COVID-19 cases, confirmed by RT-PCR tests, are forecast by the Diseases Control Department to reach 40,000-50,000 cases in mid-April and may reach 100,000 if existing restrictions are further eased, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) yesterday (Thursday).

 

Strict compliance with the requirements of Thailand’s COVID-19 “Level 4 Alert”, which allows stricter restrictions on restaurant dining, large gatherings, bars, pubs and karaoke joints, may limit the peak to about 20,000 cases a day, said the department. Level 5 is the highest which can involve imposing a curfew.

Covid deaths lag no longer in play with its increasing rates. Since Omicron was reported as 90% dominant middle Jan its more than reasonable to assume that these deaths now are due to Omicron and from yesterdays report they are mostly happening in the still unvaccinated elderly groups.

Yes, and as you quite rightly stated Brian in yesterday's update, many of these deaths among the elderly could have been avoided which leads us to the question, why are the elderly not being vaccinated? Serious underlying health conditions, not reaching out to the elderly or something else? I guess we'll never know.

 

Furthermore, will we ever get a daily breakdown of deaths by type of variant? I doubt it.

Why those older people in Isaan and elsewhere decline vaccine is a great question. I just asked the gf and she said it's not so much a distrust of the government but that they just don't understand the disease. They think if they stay home anyway which they normally do they don't need a shot. I point out if just one grandkid comes to the house is all it takes, but again, they don't get it. Outreach required I guess.

That's a significant drop in ATK test positives. One has to wonder if the number yesterday was a patchwork of a few days.  If not you have to wonder why, or if it's because not as many reported the positive tests.

 

We're the ATK tests shown yesterday from the public or from migrant workers that have now been bubble and sealed. I guess we will never no as there is no clear and consistent reporting on such things.

 

Out of sight and out of mind except to put fear into the public when this government decides too.

A few of my Thai friends have elderly parents that refuse to take the vaccine. 

 

Generally they are afraid of the side effects of the vaccine due to other health issues like Diabetes. One got very sick from the first one and now refuses to take it again despite being cajoled by their son and daughter. It's available, they just don't want it. Very unwise IMO, but ultimately their body their choice.

These local reports tend to be more illuminating.  99.2% of known cases tend to be mild or asymptomatic.  And that's the tip of the iceberg- there could be 4 times as many in the community that are utterly trivial.

 

Note- just a handful of people in a very serious condition!

Official new COVID cases rose for the third consecutive day to 23,834 on Friday, while new daily COVID deaths increased yet again to set another record high for the year at 54. Total COVID cases under care also rose again to a new yearly record high of 227,843.

 

In terms of serious hospitalizations, the current number of serious COVID hospitalizations declined to 1,115 from yesterday's 1,135 record high tally for the year. But the number of intubated COVID patients rose again from 325 yesterday to 337 today, setting another record high for the year.

 

Among the 227,843 COVID cases under care, the number hospitalized in regular hospitals rose to 80,539, but that remained below the record high for the year. But the number of COVID cases in alternate care such as hospitels, home and community care rose even more to 147,304 and set a new record high for the year.

 

Overall, Friday's new COVID cases count of 23,834 represented the country's third highest case tally of 2022, trailing only two days in late February. The 31,571 unofficial cases tally from Friday, counting positive ATK tests, was Thailand's second highest number for the year. Together, the combined 55,405 official and unofficial cases was the second highest number for the year.

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and intubated patients peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

 Ouch!  If the gloomy projections above prove correct, that means the official daily COVID case count by mid-April would almost double from the current mid 20,000s levels, or more!

 

The latest actual daily stats reported today clearly show Thailand's Omicron wave is continuing on its upward trend right now.

 

The bleak projection above from MoPH would suggest that they don't see that wave peaking any time soon. And that likely means even higher daily death levels and cases hospitalized in serious condition.

 

Gotta remember, presumably, they're now also factoring in the emergence and rapid rise of the BA2 strain of Omicron in Thailand which, while it apparently doesn't cause more serious health issues, is once again more contagious than the original Omicron variant.

I'm guessing yesterday's ATK count, which marked a huge increase from all prior days, was some kind of counting/statistical aberration for whatever reason. But even if you leave out yesterday's ATK tally, today's number was still the second highest of the year and well above all prior daily counts.

 

Im happy my tickets and hotelbooking on 24th can be changed without any problem.I have a feeling its going against lockdown again.Same my last trip.

Just speculation....

 

Barring the emergence of some new COVID variant with a very different/more serious illness profile, I THINK they're done with any further/tougher restrictions on incoming tourists.

 

But domestically, if the case and hospitalization stats continue to rise/deteriorate, I wouldn't rule out the prospect of them imposing some new/restored types of business operating restrictions...  not that the ones they supposedly have now are actually being seriously enforced.

 

My wife's Thai company in BKK still has all their office staff pretty much working from home, ongoing for months now. There was some thought around New Year that might be lifted. But then a new memo came down from HR recently restating the work from home policy for the foreseeable future, indeterminate time.

Another jump upwards today from the 337 cases yesterday!

 

Health officials on Friday (Mar 4) reported 493 new COVID-19 cases in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, of which 106 cases were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 219 cases were found in Pranburi, 22 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 1 case in Kuiburi, 31 cases in Thap Sakae, 9 cases in Bang Saphan, 27 cases in Bang Saphan Noi, and 219 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The spike in cases was the result of a cluster discovered at military training school in Pranburi.

No new COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the province today.

--In Hong Kong, where the peak is expected in the middle of March, cases reached a new daily record of 56,827.

 

--South Korea's cases [March 3] topped 240,000 for the first time, with more than 60% reported from the Seoul area, according to Yonhap News... and health officials expect cases to peak in the middle of March.

 

--In Japan, among the countries reporting later Omicron variant surges, cases are starting to decline, though hospitals are still under pressure, according to Reuters.
