FTI Says Thailand Faces 700,000 Laborer Shortage

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has indicated that Thailand is facing a shortage of about 700,000 laborers. It is urging the government to facilitate international human movement and pardon employers who previously hired illegal labor.

 

The FTI explained that production businesses, as well as the export and construction sectors, are being acutely affected by the shortage. It also said in a letter to the Ministry of Labor in February that the issue is expected to impact the tourism and services sectors - and eventually the Thai economy as a whole - if left unaddressed.

 

Many Thais are interested in labor-intensive work, leaving employers with no choice but to rely on migrant workers. There were previously more than 2 million foreign laborers in the country, but the COVID-19 pandemic saw that figure plummet by 500,000-600,000.

 

The FTI has recommended that authorities quickly sign memoranda of understanding to import labor from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. It has also advised officials to establish a program for migrant workers similar to the “Test & Go” scheme, in order to reduce or remove quarantine requirements.

Sounds to me like Thai workers are demanding a living wage and it threatens to cut into profits

There' no shortage of labor workers there are millions of Thai Bludgers that Don't want to do a good honest day work. Don't let the Foreigners in Make the Lazy Thai Bludgers work.

Wasn't that difficult.

There, found about half the needed  laborers!!

Oddly there is one skill they all need competence in foreign languages esp English , Chinese , Japanese, even Russian, German, Hindi for tourist area but retired teachers are not allowed to work.

I know of several highly qualified ex EFL teachers forced to retire at 60 , its not even easy to volunteer legally requiring paperwork and visa hassle etc.

 

The first step could be to retrain/fire local EngRISHHH teachers and remove corruption from the exam system, have English exams online moderated by an external agent like the British Council, of course Mickey Mouse degree/certs would still be sold as is the tradition of rich queue, it makes you realize thy do not want the praa to be able to read International media or question their masters.

And 50 % of Thai males in the areas where I live want to sit on their bums , drink Lao Khao, whilst their wives/partners work there hearts out to feed and clothe their good for nothing partners.  Why ? goodness knows but there is not really a shortage of Thai labour, just an abundance of lazy Thai males who think they are self entitled to do FA most of their lives. Whether it a genetic, cultural or an education issue I don't know but I do know there is no shortage of male Thais who are able to work.

If you don't look at what skills you need and what skills people got, it might not be difficult

Well they should things are different here Cheap rent cheap food   families living together  60 THB  hospital insurance .compare that to the "western world" than one can understand that .    Well some people can.

There are easily that many good-for-nothings sitting around various villages up in Isan. No need for foreign labourers, unless, of course, they are looking for skilled labourers.
