Sanctions targeting Russia’s largest banks and financial institutions in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine are having an impact on Russian expats in Hua Hin.

These expatriates aren’t wealthy oligarchs but ordinary people who, like many of us, have chosen Hua Hin as their home.

They run small businesses or are parents with young children who attend local schools.

Hua Hin has a growing Russian expatriate community of an estimated 1,500 people.

I have more sympathy for Ukrainians at the moment.

I'm sure the Russians embassy will take care of their own...

I'm not entirely sure I could tell the difference between a Ukrainian and a Russian.

One thing is the megalomaniac midget, oligarchs and gangsters, and something else are its citizens, expats, normal people and families trying to enjoy their vacations.

A gift to russian mafia world wide. Desperation can make people do things they normally wouldnt do.

The Russian is the one with a 'Z' on his forehead!

If they relying on income from their home country, Russia, as  most other expats do.

Without access to Russian banks they are going to have problems with money.

Putin is shutting down the internet and countries are refusing to deal with Russian financial institutions so not a good scenario.

Dependes on what resourches their embassy have.

I have been thinking if something happens In Norway, if my Embassy would be able to help out and support the Norwegians living here. Anyway, most have or should have some kind of emergency deposit, be it money in bank, gold, or anything that is not connected to the system back home.

New times new challenges be prepered

Best to keep your powder dry.  Could see fire sale properties, yachts, cars.

For Russians in Thailand I see 3 potentail issues.

International money transfers:

SWIFT not available. Some specialized international transfers also following ban.

For air travel back to Russia:

Maybe return travel through Middle East countries not on Putin's list of "unfriendly countries" such as Syria. Also maybe transfer through China and North Korea. Given the current depreciation of the ruble, airfare might be higher than original prepaid flight reservations.

Use of bank issued credit/debit cards:

Russian issued bank card for Visa, Mastercard and American Express cannot be used abroad or for international payments online.

Best to contact Russian Embassy in Thailand for support.
