The GI Jane 2 joke was a reference to Jada Pinket's bald head, shaved due to a recent diagnosis of alopecia. So Chris Rock was joking about Will Smith's wife's medical condition, which does make it a little more understandable why he over-reacted. He did tearfully apologize during his acceptance speech. Still, a disappointing display of poor behavior, which sadly feeds unfair stereotypes about black men. I prefer to focus on the Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmation hearings which should be a source of pride and hope for all Americans.

Smith needs to go down for this - I mean, be blacklisted for a few years as punishment. If he objected to the joke he should have walked out and made a suitable complaint later, not got up in front of millions - including children - hit a guy on live television then sat down hurling expletives. What kind of an example is that?

 

There's no secret about his wife's condition - she has made videos about it in order to get attention. If anything, the joke was an ice-breaker to get people to ease up about a little-known condition. They should have just laughed.
