Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Featured Replies

No I don't own an electric vehicle partly because I disagree with the inbuilt telemetry/tracking and updatable OS etc.

Also my ICE vehicles are

functioning perfectly well without any of the above intrusive spying so I'll  use them till they are no longer useable,

I'm doing my bit for the “enviroment" by not throwing away perfectly usable stuff.

My question was aimed at all EV users, are they not concerned about the intrusive tracking and telemetry

Inherent in these vehicles?

Rule 39a. Is that to do with using AI to answer ?  Yeah I don't use that either !!!

I don’t care, they can track me, record my conversations and anything else they want.  They will just waste their time.

Customers don’t like subscription models to enable features already in the car.  It causes ill will and customer annoyance.

IMHO, it’s sharp practice. BMW tried it with heated seats and had to stop.

It first started with IBM who shipped a mainframe computer with double the stated memory.  Customer wanted to upgrade and the engineer came along and twiddled something in the back of the computer and bingo the computer had double the memory, the customer paid tens of thousands of dollars.  Word got out and customers did it themselves.

Someone will figure out how to turn all the disabled features on and we’ll all hack our cars.

Don't view it as paying for something extra, instead view it as you’ve already paid for it to be fitted to your car but the manufacturer is saying, unless you pay me extra you can’t have it turned on.  IMHO it’s nonsense.

I definitely would not buy an EV. I think they should be available if you want one but they are not for me. I will stick to ICE vehicles.

Good for you. Good also that you have the time to post in a forum that you have no interest in. Or is that sad?

These people who don’t like EV’s and/or worry about deep state accessing telemetry and other data remind me of the senator from the former colonies who asked the CEO of TikTok if the CCP could access his brain through his earphones if he was watching TikTok.

Much like the anti-EV folks, IMHO TikTok would have the most difficult first task of (a) determining if the senator had a brain and (b) finding said brain.

Maybe the forum linked below is more appropriate for your thoughts on EVs.   As the forum you're posting on is for people actually interested in EVs in TH.

I am surer a lot of people are interested and that is fine but it should be a choice not a dictate.

It is sad if like you, you believe everything the adverts tell you. Once you come out of your little bubble you may get a surprise and realise not everyone is in favour of EV's. Your comment is exactly what I expected from someone who believes that you can think and say what you want unless it is against EV's.

If you like big SUVs I would suggest test driving a BYD Sealion 7. It costs ฿1,249,900 for the Performance variant and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. The entry-level Premium variant is priced at ฿1,149,900.

The CRV  is priced from ฿1,419,000 to ฿1,729,000. The AWD models take 9.4 seconds 0-100. The 2025 CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring can achieve the same in approximately 7.9 seconds but it does have a battery and an electric motor.

And where exactly do you need really good acceleration? The road are far too dangerous to open a vehicle up. In Germany yes no problem but Thailand I think not.

It is a choice, if you do your research before buying, maybe, and if concerned, and if you only 'tech device'.

Walking or cycling is always an option, and healthy, without your phone of course :cheesy:

That other thread is still available if you want to stop being off topic.

I was interested in the thoughts of EV buyers  on the spyware and tracking aspects..seems that none of you are the least bit concerned  so I have my answer.

Can you all please send my your bank account details and login passwords too as you are not concerned about privacy in the slightest !!!  😋  🤣

Yeah, when you get older, you dont want to drive around in a pile of rubbish like a homeless, you will feel that life is not infinite and you wanna have something nicer. Now check the good info here and select the EV of your dreams, then report here that we can all learn something about this car.

Looks like Neta Auto is about to go bust...

https://carnewschina.com/2025/05/14/troubled-neta-auto-faces-potential-bankruptcy-rather-than-toyota-acquisition/

They are going to leave a lot of unhappy creditors behind...this could have a major impact on the Thai auto industry.

Apparently they owe Nissan Leasing (Thailand) 10 billion baht!

Therein lies the problem. You come on here knowing only what you’ve read and tries to debate with actual owners who have first hand experience of owning and driving both EVs and ICEVs.

Your 20 year old car may not be a pile of rubbish to you but… compared to a modern EV… it is, sadly.

I don’t know what the adverts told me as I don’t watch adverts (I have a YT premium membership). What I do know is that dollar for dollar, my EV is a far superior vehicle to any ICEVs I have previously owned. I also know that not everyone is in favour of EVs and that there are certain downsides. Every EV owner acknowledges that.

What is sad is that there are some who are so blinkered that they won’t accept an EV is a good choice for some. Their only argument is that EVs are rubbish without being able to say why. Just from what they read, if you know what I mean…

RISK COMPARISON

If we say the risk of getting one of these great diseases by having unprotected sex with a Pattaya coconut tree stray is 98.6%.

Then the risk of having the Chinese government spy on an 80 year old expat in Issan would be a poofteenth of a %, ie .000000001%.

It is a smallish worry that an update to my car could brick it.

After reading above articles and below article it does not look good for Neta.   Note below where it says domestics sales (i.e., in China its main market) was only 487 vehicles in Jan and Feb 2025 combined....that's a sure sign Chinese customers fear Neta is going to go belly-up....no one wants to buy a car which may lose ongoing support...become an outcast.

I wonder what the actual government "registration" numbers (i.e., sale completed with blue book and red tags issued) have been over the last few months in Thailand for Neta?   Bookings/reservations mean little if potential customers get scared the company might not survive and the customers back-out before committing to actually buying.

https://carnewschina.com/2025/04/14/neta-auto-faces-escalating-crisis-as-dealers-drotest-at-factory-gates/

Neta’s domestic sales have plummeted dramatically. Data shows the company sold only 487 vehicles in January and February 2025 combined, with no disclosed sales figures for March. These numbers fall well below those of other Chinese EV brands that have already declared bankruptcy or exited the market. Current sales show minimal demand for its model lineup, with the Neta X accounting for just 272 units and the NETA L for 149 units during this period.

As its home market collapses, NETA is increasingly pivoting to international markets, particularly Thailand. The company recently announced it received 1,219 orders during the Thailand Motor Show and has set an ambitious target of selling over 10,000 vehicles in Thailand in 2025, aiming to become the second-largest new energy vehicle brand in the country.

Ludicrous   a nuisance how ?

asking if EV owners are concerned about privacy issues ??

Anyway It seems that none of you are concerned  about the issue  just concerned about the person asking the question   rather odd.

Just took a look at the Thailand DLT "registration" stats for Jan - Apr 2025 and NETA sales are heading south.   While Apr was not a great month for most car manufacturers when compared to the previous 3 months the NETA registrations had a big drop in Apr.  So far for 2025 NETA registrations have been: 985 in Jan, 288 in Feb, 237 in Mar, and 123 in Apr.

Jan is typically a good registrations month for pretty much every car manufacturer due to end of year sales typically during the previous Nov/Dec which don't possibly materialize into actual completed sales/registrations until a month or two later and then typically appear in the ensuing Jan registration stats like shown below.

So, with all the recent news over the last few months regarding Neta's financial challenges and the typical registration pop in Jan, it might be best just to ignore Jan registration numbers to determine "current" potential customer buying sediment.  Hopefully Neta pulls through but it will probably be the primary home market in China versus overseas markets like in Thailand that really determine Neta's future.

Yea....if ignoring Jan stats which has typically been a distorted registrations month due to previous year end of year sales/motor shows it does look like BYD is on a roll....even exceeding 2023 sales which was a hot selling year for EVs in general.

BYD now has numerous more models in comparison to "earlier years" when it was pretty much by an Atto or Dolphin then adding Seal to that line-up.   But now they also have the Sealion 7, Sealion 6 (a hybrid), and M6.    More models and choices is probably behind BYD increasing sales....along with BYD now being the 4rd largest vehicle seller in Thailand behind Toyota, Honda, and Isuzu....and I expect this year BYD will probably move into the 3rd position when not even counting Denza which BYD owns and has separate registration stats.
