A 34 year old man from Loei armed with a fake gun and a small axe managed to gain access to a restricted area at Suvarnabhumi Airport where a plane was parked.

The drama started just before midday yesterday and was over within ten minutes.

77kaoded reported that the man managed to gain access to the area by riding a motorcycle as an official pick-up was going through the entrance to a restricted area at Controlpost 3.

A chase ensued in which the man came off his bike and was chased through a door to the passenger terminal area which smashed injuring him.

He was also hurt in the scuffles.

He was taken into custody and charged with six offences that could see him jailed for life.

He was named as Watchara Khambut, 34, from Loei in Thailand's north eastern region. He was still under the influence of drugs so was largeely incoherent.

Taken into evidence was the fake gun, a 50 cm axe and one orange  yaba tablet in a plastic container as well as an item of gold jewelry.

A video published by the media showed airport police and security officials giving chase.

Four officials were injured, reported Thai Rath, who quoted the Thai transport minister Saksayam Chidchob as saying that the airport was safe. They said the incident occurred between 11.53 and 12.04pm.

Airport director Kittipong Kittikhajorn said that all the actions plans to mitigate such an incursion were in place but he promised a review of security at Bangkok's main airport.

The suspect, a warehouseman at Bangsaothong who lives at nearby Muang Mai Bang Plee, reportedly said that he had had a paranoid attack hearing voices that he needed to attack a plane.

He was charged with breaching security and causing a dangerous incident at the airport, a charge that carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

At the least his escapade could see him jailed for up to 20 years and fined 600,000-800,000 baht said 77kaoded.

Other charges included having an axe, drug taking, criminal damage and resisting arrest.

Interesting. The clip showed an employee confronting the suspect then attempting a side kick at the suspect that was brandishing an axe. That employee was brave. He should be commended.

Interesting the voices in his head told him to mask up.  Psy op?

The guy obviously needs medical help more than he needs derision.

Give him a raise... or a job as head of security.

Most secure airports have double gates at vehicle access points which contain vehicles.

They are allowed through the first gate which is then closed behind them, while the person/s are processed and the vehicle searched. They are then allowed through the second gate to air side areas.

Something very lax going on here.

This is just normal Thai mentality. I can't understand why anyone is surprised since this is what the Thai schools anf society does to the Thai citizens.

His real crime?

Showing that there is no proper security at Thailand's airports.  he should be commended for doing this.

Ignore this warning at your peril, and allow Terrorists a weak point to get on an aircraft.

Remember 9/11 ?  happened because security at US airports was rubbish at that time and Terrorists knew that and took advantage.

Understandably using guns around aircaft loaded with fuel could be very risy. But surely they could use a Taser like  the British and American police do.

Just the story Thailand wants to encourage tourists to return.

Clearly a misunderstanding from his spiritual being who sent the voices.

A couple of wai's will resolve the matter.

To which part of his anatomy might this refer, one wonders........

I'm surprised the article listed he had jewelry and the cops didn't steal it instead and never mention it.

What an inspiring first post. NOT!

Thailand just seem to get Madder and Madder by the Day.

1. Airport director Kittipong Kittikhajorn needs to resign immediately so they can hire someone who is competent.

2. A thorough review of security procedures needs to take place.

3. What on earth was this guy doing wearing a cloth mask? Masks are ridiculous and completely useless on a motorbike anyway. But, when you want to invade an international airport, it does not serve much of a purpose. It just looks even dumber than he looked already.

How many other places in the world would you see this desperate attempt to hit back at society! Did he believe his plastic gun could hijack a plane and set him free from the police state where he lives? Another example of care in the community failure, and a country really struggling with mental health issues.

No worse than the riots that shut down the airport and stranded 1000s.

I was at Don Muang airport domestic a while ago, and saw a rucksack left on a seat with no-one in sight. I went to the nearest gate and told the airline employee about it, and she asked me what to do! I suggested that it might be a good idea to call security, which she did and they didn't answer! She then asked me to show her the bag and I walked up the terminal just behind her and she walked right past without even noticing it! When we returned to the gate there were another couple of bags left right by the entrance to the airbridge. I asked her about those and her response was 'Oh, they belong to the (Thai) crew'.

And there you have Thai 'security'. It's like dealing with children. And any potential terrorists will be fully aware of its shortcomings. It's probably only a matter of time, especially with the unrest in the South.

Sounds to me like yabaa is involved.

Sounds about right for the airport director but what about the perp? ????

The trouble is it all sounds perfectly normal for here right now ????

Slack airport security fair enough, but I guess it's lucky the voices in his head didn't tell him that he needed to attack a bus or train !
