Child falls down drain at Pattaya hotel - execs tell the press to stop filming to prevent loss of face

Siam Rath reported on an incident last night in which a 12 year old girl got stuck in a drain at a hotel near the dolphin roundabout in North Pattaya.

 

They said that hotel executives tried to stop them filming and taking pictures as they were so worried about being exposed and losing face. 

 

Sawang Boriboon rescue were called around 7.30 pm after hospital staff were unable to get B's left leg out of the drain that had a heavy three and a half inch cover. 

 

Cutting equipment was needed and it took five minutes before she was safely removed.

Her lower left leg had an injury and abrasions and after first aid she was taken to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

 

Her aunt Jutharat, 39, said she had been walking in the gardens with B when she heard her scream up ahead. 

 

Staff were called but couldn't resolve the matter so rescue services were needed.

 

Not surprisingly in defamation crazy Thailand, Siam Rath did not name the hotel in their article. 

 

But they made a point in both their headline and in the body of their story at how hotel officials had tried to hush up the incident.

If the executives had an ounce of savvy, they could have used the press to highlight the hotels staff reactions to the "accident" and how they organised prompt and expert help in having the girl released from the drain cover.

Siting that all staff are trained in such emergencies.

Yet they only understand COVER-UP!!!!!

I agree.. a good, sharp PR team could have minimized any initial public blow back … and even turned it into something like a positive — sure, it’s spin.. but that’s what PR and media relations is.. controlling the narrative to a direction most favorable to your position while being the least favorable to that of your opposition (if applicable) 

The other thing is largely you don’t want the public shaping their own opinion as many will automatically take the position that’s least favorable to you … and once that initial position is formed, it’s hard to change later on.

Was that 3.5 inches thick? If so, 5 minutes was good going.

It is a criminal, not civil, case in Thailand. You can go to prison for defamation. If you have ever seen the inside of a Thai prison, it is not recommended.

All things aside I’m just glad the young lady is ok and I hope the hotel can (save face) by awarding an appropriately sized brown envelope to the young lass

few weeks ago i was walking near sukhumvit road soi 16, when suddenly

i twisted my ankle because of an uneven road blocks.

this made me look around and realise in what dirt hole i am walking.

the streets are dirty, electricity wires popping out everywhere, dangerous ladyboys and prostitutes in every corner, sex toys and fake viagra stalls every few meters, stuff, and yet very expensive real estate, apartments and condos, sold and rented at top first world prices.

It comes down to perhaps the single most significant weakness most Thai people have. The pathological fear of losing face. Who cares what people think of you? For those of us with high self esteem, it just does not matter. Sure, close friends and family. But strangers on the street? It means nothing what they think, nor what they say about you. Nothing, less than zero. They count for nothing. They are just people, and people you do not know, nor will ever see again.

 

Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, and man or woman is made a far lesser person. I consider the practice of face to be the polar opposite of the practice of Buddhism, which teaches the need for introspection, contemplation, owning up to a problem, and taking responsibility for issues, problems and tragedies that you create in life.

That would be about 90mm thick, and yes it would be heavy.

I know for a fact the police and press will accept gratuities to suppress negative stories that may effect prestigious entities. 
This story somehow got out.
