Student seriously injured after being hit by motorcycle on Zebra X-ing - CCTV footage is clear

Siam Rath published a story about yet another school student being hit and seriously injured by a motorcyclist while crossing a zebra on the way to class in the morning.

 

It follows another incident in Chiang Mai.

This time the M2 - second year of secondary - female student suffered a fracture of the leg/groin area.

 

The media had clear footage from CCTV.

Chartchai Chitkadechanarong, deputy director of Banharn Jemsai Withaya 3 school in Dan Chang sub-district of Suphanburi, central Thailand, said that teachers and security were immediately on the scene and a passing ambulance ferried the injured teen to Dan Chang hospital.

 

She was later transferred to another hospital.

Pol Lt-Col Jetsada Panichwong deputy at the Dan Chang police said that the motorcyclist did not flee the scene.

 

They said they had difficulty stopping in time. The person responsible is a local employee who was on their way to work.

 

The person has been in touch with the parents and will be prosecuted.

I don't know how that bike rider didn't see the large group of children on the crosswalk and have time to stop. More likely he thinks he has the right of way.

 

Prosecutions and heavy penalties are going to be the only way to get the message across.

It's a very sad state of affairs when the report needs to state "police said that the motorcyclist did not flee the scene."

Nah, I don´t really think they believe they have the right of way, but unfortunately too many are fiddling with their mobile phones at the same time. No eyes on the road, more likely.

If he habitually rides without looking he would have killed himself under a bus long before.

I believe it is a sense of entitlement about ownership of the road.

Last week I drove through the mountains directly behind a police truck for about 20 kms. I was happy to see he was keeping a moderate speed for conditions but sad that he cut the turns going into the oncoming lane numerous times. Made for dangerous conditions as many of those turns were blind turns where oncoming traffic could not be seen from a safe distance.

 

Upon entering the city limits and passing by the local hospital there was a zebra crossing with pedestrians waiting to cross and the police truck didn't even hesitate let alone stop. I stopped and waited for the pedestrians to walk across the street as a few nodded in my direction thanking me.

Once more, if you're suicidal and want to get run over, use a zebra crossing. If not, better cross the road some place else... ????

Zebra crossing in Thailand is on an advisory bases only, user beware, like wadding through a minefield and you're considered lucky to have crossed one safely...

And made to take compulsory riding lessons to teach them how to stop at a crossing.

For decades nobody cared about it... and how can you expect to change the habbit of not following any traffic rule in a few months?? Start with teach them primary rules in primary schools, make decent education and exams before getting a drivers license and oblige the police to enforce the traffic rules with heavy fines..

For decades it was only primarily foreigners (and Thai’s who’d spent time overseas) who recognised the issue and complained about it. 

Any Thai in a position of decision making power never cared about this, they don’t need to cross the road....

 

Now social medial has raised the awareness, a few high profile deaths have embarrassed the decision makers into ‘doing something’...  a crack-down announced, a few crossings painted and they’ve saved face... they have done something !!!...   

 

The reality is the utter ineffectiveness of anything done highlights they still just do not care. 

 

 

For a start.. any major crossing near a school etc could be raised (like a large speed bump) so that vehicles are forced to slow down, also put a speed bump 50m before if we have to....  

Then put more footbridges across major roads... 

 

IF Thailand an afford submarines, it can afford to do something about road safety.

Use some of that money they just borrowed from the Japanese !

O.K. I am just going to throw this idea out there, and just maybe some school directors, and teachers will take up the challenge.........Now I know, after more than 25 years here, that I am being just a tiny bit optimistic, but would it not be a good idea for the teaching staff to take turns to monitor the crossings in the mornings and afternoons. I realise that a lollipop lady such as we have in England would have a shorter life span than a Kamikaze pilot, but surely a teacher wearing a hi vis jacket could have some success.....................

To me, they need some flashing lights at these crossings as drivers just don't stop for faded white strips. Failing to stop happens every where in Thailand, and the people or kids crossing are very scared as they don't know if they will make it or not.

I can’t get your explanation of who has the right of way on a zebra here, stand close to a crossing for 10 minutes and see him many road users stop to let someone cross

The kids have a way of making it every time. They can look and take necessary precautions. However, that should not be necessary.

The whole mechanism of Thai roads, laws, drivers needs a radical overhaul, street furniture would help,  having a crossing on a 4 lane road with no central refuge defies the rules of physics by any  stretch of the imagination.

I think it more about the need to educate Thai people to stop for pedestrians on crossings.. They simply do NOT do that, at current time..

You opened your reply with that you didn’t think Thai road users think they have right of way, i said I didn’t get that,  and go and stand close to a crossing for 10 minutes and it is clear Thai  road users DO think they gave right of way,

Earlier today we were in town and had parked safely in a one way street. I instinctively looked to my left before crossing to which my wife asked me why when the traffic will come from the right. 
I replied that safety is second nature to most westerners and why so many of hers will never make my age. She simply smiled.

I simply avoid zebra crossing, too dangerous. Better cross the street at random places like everybody else.
