Popular Post mvdf
I always tip when good to excellent service is provided. And for exceptionally good service I tend to be more generous. I always get ear to ear smiles and thanks in return. Helps make my day complete.
Popular Post spidermike007
This guy sounds like a real winner. I get so much gratitude from a waitress for a 20 baht tip. Same with Panda. They are so happy. In the US, barely an acknowledgement for a $20 tip at a restaurant. I usually give a small tip to taxis, and they love it too. To each his own. No need to tip for laundry, take out, etc. That is being overly gratuitous.
Popular Post Walker88
I tip in appropriate situations, which I guess are 'appropriate' according to my personal definition. For a meal? Tip. In a bar? Tip my server always. If it's an agogo, buy the server a drink sometimes, too. If a woman on stage dances well---I don't mean sexy, but rather is fluid and coordinated (think Michael Jackson or JT Taylor of Kool & the Gang), and also working to make customers enjoy the night---I will discreetly slip her a folded 1000 baht note as I leave the club. Taxi? If he has taken the correct route and not purposely gone out of the way, and---because there are some rides I take repeatedly and know the cost---if his meter is correctly adjusted. Haircut? Always, perhaps until I go bald, which I hope is never. The woman who washes my hair also gets a tip. Hotel housekeeping? Every day, under the pillow. If a long stay, the woman learns your schedule and cleans while you eat breakfast, so if one's habit is to do a little work in the room after breakfast, one is not disturbed. Panda or Grab? Always. The guy faced death delivering through BKK traffic. Unlike the OP, I have never had anyone moan about the size of the tip. I tip not to get thanks (though get them), but because I suspect they are underpaid and may well be struggling to make ends meet. Sure, that isn't my fault, but it isn't such a bad thing to give a fellow human a bit of a boost and recognize their efforts. I'm not a sucker, and not that fool who will soon be parted from his money. I just believe it is appropriate to reward good service or a friendly face. Same here, if my Lazada order is B223 and I give them B230, I get genuine appreciation, even though it's almost nothing. I just hope that 10 other people do the same in one day so the boy can get himself a well deserved beer at the end of a crappy day of risking his life for bu99er all. Old Croc
When I first came to Thailand I was pleasantly surprised to find people who actually put fuel in the car for me and collected the payment at my window. I didn't have to get out to operate the pump nor walk inside to pay! I was happy to tip 100baht each time. Then one of these people stole from me by failing to put any fuel in when I was in a hurry, I was lucky to make it home with a near empty tank. I never tipped them again and calculated that about every tenth fill-up cost me nothing thanks to that one thief who cruelled it for all. I still don't bother to pick up change coins at a restaurant. In the US it is about $12 in delivery fees alone. Why not help out a hard working chap? What does that 10 baht mean to us? There is also a loftier component here. By showing even minor generosity, and decency, we keep the heart open and that keeps us feeling better and being more useful to our community.
MrJ2U
Sounds like your having a terrible holiday. Tipping for good service is standard practice. Leave the tip, and feel good for helping these workers support themselves and thier families. Don't expect accolades for doing it. Popular Post ColeBOzbourne
When I tip at a restaurant I never hear a 'thank you' because I leave the money on the table as I walk out the door. They find it after I'm already gone. Some people can't do that because it denies them the glory of basking in their own generosity. 6
Popular Post bkk6060
I tip, but I think some Thais depends on the circumstances may think it is degrading or cheap. Especially, leaving 10 or 20 b usually get no acknowledgement back. Funny though, got gas in my motorbike yesterday some young kid pumps it and I give him 20 b tip. He was so excited, smiling he ran yelling and waved the 20 b in the air showing all his coworkers. Made his day I guess. 1

As far as I know Thais don't tip. You just don't do that in here. They might round up the bill amount but that's it. Restaurants usually charge you 10% for the service. You can throw in an additional 50 to 100THB for good measure. This is how I do it: - Taxis >> round up - Bars and local restaurants >> 20THB + annoying coins - Western-style restaurants >> 100THB - Massage girls >> 100THB I don't really care about how they treat me. Thais can be pretty weird sometimes. I don't judge. Also I don't like to give any tip directly. I leave it on the table or something you know. Anyway. I hope you'll have a better run of things in the future OP ????

I know lots of Thai people with more money than me. I never tip anyone for anything (excluding ladies that provide extra services). State your price, and I'll decide if I want the product/service or not. If you want more, ask for more right at the start. If you're an employee who feels you don't get paid enough, look for another job. Edited June 23, 2022 by BritManToo 4

So yeah, that boy got a good tip ! Amazing service and VALUE in my book. Imagine what the cost wouldve been in the West. Generally out and about, no I dont tip unless its not bothering with "shrapnel" with change, and I dont regard that as a tip, more a convenience for me as I hate coins. Yeah I pay what they're worth. I've tipped taxi drivers double, and just one or two times I've flipped a tuk tuk driver a half fare and done a runner. One sod in Nong Khai, I said to the misses "you distract him and I'll cut his ignition wire", but she wouldn't be in it.

itsari
Thailand has not a tipping culture as in the United States for example . The waiters depend on tips to make a livable wage in the US . I have stopped having a beer at a local foreigners bar on this issue of tipping . I like to buy a beer as I order them and then the guy serving would throw a plate under my nose with the change . If I never left any change I was often accused of being a cheap charlie . I asked the guy to forget the tray when i order a beer , That fell on deaf ears . Now I forget to go there and have a beer in a Thai bar that is far cheaper and no tray thrust at me . Yes I do tip the bar person often at the Thai bar . Mostly received reluctantly , so i say now its for the ice . 1
Lacessit
I tip according to circumstances. I am acutely aware there are some Thais who only have one-third or one-quarter of the income they used to have pre-COVID. I won't tip if the service is perfunctory. As I have developed a network of services I know are reliable, I always tip them. I trust the OP feels better now.

And I would bet that any w/experience have a pretty good idea who might be cheap. A masseuse once told me of a young man who wanted special services, then after, dashed out of the shop w/o even paying for the massage... but you are saying calling him cheap is indefensible - I am saying he was cheap... 2 week millionaire?
