A house panel is planning to propose to the Thai government the establishment of five legal casinos, with revenues taxed at 30%, believing that it would help reduce problems with illegal gambling dens.

 

Pichet Chuamuangphan, the second vice-chairman of a house committee which studies the legalisation of entertainment complexes, said, after its meeting yesterday (Wednesday), that they have submitted their findings to the government for them to consider the establishment of legal casinos, one each in the north, northeast and central region, Greater Bangkok and the southern region. He said that such casinos would allow all forms of gambling, from traditional to online gambling.

 

Pichet also explained that, for the legal casinos, the government would allow concessions with the private sector, from which the government will collect 30% tax, including local maintenance tax which can be used for the maintenance of such venues.

 

Gamblers would need to be at least 20 years old to enter the legal casinos and provide their financial status before entering. Government officials would not be allowed to enter, unless they have permits.

LOL  heck the illegal ones probably give better odds than the government.  I know that is true in the USA. 

This reminds me of a joke where a man who was a billionaire saw a gorgeous woman and he approached her saying she was beautiful and he wanted to have sex with her.  She said, I am no prostitute who do you think you are.  He replied I am a billionaire and would be willing to pay you $1 million dollars to have sex with she.  She thought for a moment and said, well ok once and it is $1 million correct and she agreed.  He said, ok how about for $50 dollars.  She replied disgustingly, $50 what kind of a woman to you think I am.  He said, we have already determined that, we are only hagggling over price now. 

Obviously the lure of tax revenue overides anyones distates for gambling.

Do these people even care that there is already a gambling problem here in Thailand, and folks go into debt and some lose houses, cars and so on.  Of course it is no different in other countries that have casinos, but the problems they have now and without the casinos will triple or quadruple.  Add in the prostitution, mafia types, and then the goons.  Keep the country devoid of Casino's, a better bet would be to allow foreigners to own land, capped at a small percentage for each area.

People who gamble will do so anyway. The majority of them do it on their phones or at their workplace, village, etc.

I don't see how an actual physical walk-in casino will change normal people's gambling habits, tbh.

It will prevent however, the billions of Baht / dollars that Thailand loses just over it's borders with it's immediate neighbours.

And provide their financial status before entering  Lol so they have to supply there up to date ( the same day as they enter the casino) print out from there bank books ????  Just like we have to do for our renewal of our Retirement visa ????  That would be funny

This government like many don't really care the headlines of this story should provide plenty of evidences!   " REVENUE 30% "  end of story!  ????????  money talks and is above all things versus people concerns.  Oh don't forget the common line used by leaders JOBS!

I wonder how long it will be before UK style betting shops or Aussie pokies will dot every street corner in the Land of Smiles and Debt.

Was living in Singapore when the Casinos opened & you couldn't get into a taxi without the uncle (driver) telling you about their latest visit... These guys had to pay s$100 to enter but they just viewed this as a part of their gambling stake.

If I (a Brit) were to win a big Jackpot whilst on holiday in Las Vegas would I be subject to more, less or the same Tax as an American (or an LV resident) on it?

 

Genuine question as America is the only country I know of that taxes gambling/lottery wins.

Your are right on, many times when I went to the Casino in Perth[ owned by the government] I saw many Asian's there 70 to 80% and betting like there was no tomorrow and they don't stop even if they hit the jackpot
