Newborn Found Deceased in Chaiyaphum Canal, Authorities Investigating
At approximately 08:45 on November 10, Lt. Col. Watchira Phetrit, Deputy Inspector of Ban Khwao Police Station, Chaiyaphum Province, received a report from the owner of a rice mill in Moo 7, Non Daeng Subdistrict, Ban Khwao District, that a newborn’s body had been found in a canal behind the mill. Lt. Col. Watchira, along with local rescue teams and a medical examiner from Ban Khwao Hospital, immediately arrived at the scene to investigate. The canal, located behind the rice mill, is surrounded by bamboo and vegetation. In the water, they discovered the body of a newborn male, visibly bloated and with an umbilical cord still attached. The canal’s banks are overgrown with grass, and only a small section near the roadside allows water access. According to Sangwian, the rice mill owner, he opened the mill that morning as usual. While his employees were cleaning and performing regular duties, one worker who had gone to the restroom at the back of the facility noticed the baby’s body floating in the water. The employee immediately informed the authorities. Sangwian added that the mill only employs two female workers, both of whom have had sterilisation procedures and were not pregnant. He speculated that the infant might have been abandoned by a young mother who had terminated the pregnancy and disposed of the body in the canal near the roadside. Lt. Col. Watchira confirmed that the body will be sent for autopsy and DNA testing to try to identify the mother. Police are also reviewing security camera footage from nearby areas to identify any suspicious individuals who might have abandoned the infant. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities committed to locating the mother. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-11 -
