How desperate are you to stay in Thailand?

Hi everyone, long term resident in los here and a new member if this forum! I have been living here for years with my wife on multiple marriage extensions but im coming to the end of my tether to be honest. The hurdles keep getting higher and the goal posts are perpetually moving. When it comes to renewing my visa this year im opting for the multi entry visa instead. Be nice to get away from the wife for a few days a year anyway, know what I mean fellas! ????

 

anyway, how desperate are you lot to remain here? I mean if they asked for a pic of you and the mrs on the job would you oblige? Where does too much become too much for you? The amount of papers and pictures required just to stay here now is insane and I aint playin their games no more brothers!!

I wouldn't mind leaving if the world was open up like before.   YEARS ago, sure, I would prostate myself to stay (joking) and wai all the time (not joking), but now I don't care like before.   If I stay, fine.  If not, fine.   

 

All about your gut feeling.  Seems like you are ready to move on.  Sweet, listen to your gut.  Can't change who you are.   

 

Laos, Vietnam, both great.   Definitely not "desperate" to stay, but I like the rainy season and the winter.   I do hope come next February I'm in a different country, or planning.  

 

No sense living in a prison, if that's what it feels like to you.

So, whats changed in you that you now see things so differently.

Paperwork for marriage extension is the same now as it was in 2010.

If the marriage extension is too big a problem for you (once a year)

change to a retirement Extension (if over 50 ) , its so easy , but you

are going to need 800K Baht in bank,

Sorry bro, its not the case. Different offices require different papers. Some offices its easy peasy and others its a living nightmare. As always, no consistency here

I am desperate to stay in Thailand because it offers me the best lifestyle i could imagine, can't think of anywhere else as good on my pension and assets.

I don't have any Immigration problems, do my 90 day report online and front up once a year with my 800K bank book and all the paperwork. Usually done in an hour.

I'm not married, no intention of ever doing so. The extra 400K I would be able to spend is not worth the extra hassle.

I'm just wondering what the OP is tired of, the paperwork or his wife.

U are correct. Most problems are fish n chips paper ie they seem a big deal but a week later nothing like an old newspaper.

 

Everything is both a problem and an opportunity for change.

For me Bangkok/Thailand is home.

Sure, I could live somewhere else. But I feel comfortable here. I know everything important around me. I even know the taxi-no-meter drivers and we say hello to each other. 

Could I live somewhere else? Sure.

Would I want to live somewhere else? No.

For me doing the visa and work permit are not even 8h per year. I can certainly live with that.

I travelled around the world and Thailand was the only place i really wanted to live, so complying with a few rules isn't so bad

Stickman had fun in the nightlife when he started with his website. Later he wrote a lot of rubbish and he obviously didn't like it anymore. Ok, no problem, enjoy your life somewhere else.

According to rumors I am pretty sure StickBoy would liked to continue living in Thailand.

 

The word "desperate" is an indicator that the OP has a problem somewhere. It seems he think others are here because they are desperate. Those people might exist. Personally I don't know anyone like that.

As for visa hassles, I have none and never see or visit the immigration department.  I prefer to pay an agent to do the 'donkey work' so that I avoid any silly games that immigration might want to play.

I can sort of sympathise with you, although I am not desperate to stay in Thailand, however similar to you, it offers me the best lifestyle I could imagine on my pension and assets, certainly more then it would in NZ or Oz (I have relatives there).

Again, like you I do feel comfortable here and knowing everything around me in Patong, does give me a sense of comfort as I tend to be a creature of habit these days.

 

Like you have said I could probably live somewhere else, but at the age of 75 this year, would I really want to? And just to add something to that, I have been "under the weather" with a bad sinus problem and I went out yesterday for the first time for a while to get a manicure and pedicure in my local shop, mainly to give them some income rather than anything else, and the lady owner, said that if I wanted anything I could telephone her and she would get one of her girls to go to the shops to get it for me.......likewise the same from my friends girlfriend, so not sure that I would get the same sort of support elsewhere.

Anyone that uses the excuse of actually wanting to leave this place due to the VIsa/extension process, is very weak in my opinion.  What kind of job/education have these people had in their life, if any at all?

If a person cannot qualify or deal with what amounts to maybe 8 to 10 hours of your time one time a year, then good luck finding another place that suits you.

I've told this tale endless times, so here we go again - I got fed up with all the "stuff" about Thailand so I left for Zihuatanejo, Mexico. You know, that place that was highlighted at the end of "The Shawshank Redemption." It was NOTHING like the movie (though the guy I knew who lived there swore that it was). I was back in six weeks with a renewed tolerance for the "stuff," though I was tested almost immediately when I tried getting internet to my newly rented condo.

 

If not here, OP, where? Trying to find a country with fewer hoops to jump through isn't easy. In fact, many Latin countries suggest you hire an attorney to get the visa paperwork completed.

Cambodia, no hoops at all, $300/year using an agent (55+).

Philippines, no hoops at all, $50 every 2 months using an agent (no age restrictions).

And the time I spent on every subsequent application since my first marriage extension has decreased along with my anxiety and interest in the whole process.

 

I just throw all the documents at the checker, who doesn't seem to be interested in talking to me, the wife runs off to the photocopy counter. We sat and waited for 2 hours, sat infront of a paper shuffler who ripped me off for 100B. At 3:00 pm I walked out with the approval, the wife went to pick up the approved stamp a month later, took 10 mins from the time she walked in the door.

 

90 day reports online, automatically reminded by my iPhone, the web browser auto completes the form.

 

I dont see how that's difficult.
