Really like and recommend Udon Thani alot. If you haven't been there, give it a go. Spent time in Korat last year. It was OK but surely much better now that it's opened up.

Bangkok used to brilliant- I loved it until the Junta messed it up, closed down the food stalls, shut the clubs  etc etc

But up till the military regime took over it was one of the greatest  cities in the world. Now there is only one decent cosmopolitan really 'Thai' city and its Pattaya.  The most beautiful town is Phuket old town

Unusual excellent post from you, though I cannot comment on your last sentence.

My basis would be having an airport that fly's to other locations in addition to BBK ?

Or the opposite ..having no airport so no hordes of tourists !

Rate these towns out of 10 please

My personal opinion based on living in, or frequently visiting -

From your list: Khon Kaen (7), Udon Thani (5) and Nong Khai (7)

My choice: Chiang Mai (10), Chiang Rai (9), Phayao (9), Mae Sai (7), Golden Triangle/Chiang Khong (8)

Any place that has a Makro and Central Shopping Mall with food market and cinema is fine for me. Airport is also important

Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Korat would be my favorites from your list.

I might add Chiang Mai as an alternative

Been to Sukhothai a few times (both when single and attached), and although the ruins are great, it seems to have a weird vibe going on with the locals.

Serial killer vibe?

Rate them for what?

Long term livability?

Khon Khaen 2.5

The rest are somewhat between 0-1.5

Most are just 40 degree dust bowls
