TBH it was fine, I have had better but some times it depends how it is kept and poured, the biggest issue is in this temperature it soon loses its chill.

Guinness is never served chilled.

In the UK you can get Guinness or Guinness Cold so it doesn't matter really. In TH, they need to chill it to keep the gas (and hence the pour) under control otherwise you end up with a Guinness fire extinguisher.

Cold Guinness is a very new idea

Nowadays all beers are served via pumps/gas etc, the old hand pulled pumps were excellent but the breweries decided it was quicker for gas/pumps and generate more revenue.

Not  in Britain. Hand  pumps are still used at real ale pubs and modern craft  beer bars.

So how is it served, Guinness is served as extra cold in the U.K., it goes through a double chilling process.

'Irish stout Guinness must be served exactly 42 degrees from the equator, according to Roarty.Quality-control teams at the company say that the temperature should be 8 degrees, and not 50 degrees, as it seems. When used at a higher temperature, a creamy tan head with “yellows and hicks” looks like.'

Cold Guinness is a new thing. When were taught to pour Guinness we held the glass so the Guinness  landed on the thumb to bring it to the correct  temperature.

The beer was so  bad it led to the creation of CAMRA. The campaign  for real ale. Watneys Red Barrel, a keg beer was the nadir in the history of British beer.

How could I be so wrong or have at least a so different taste than the majority ? I mean, I had the Watneys BEFORE I went to Amsterdam ????. This makes me even more eager to try it again if I would see it but they do not have it in Central where they really display a large selection of different brands.

As well as Red Barrel being phased out maybe  the company changed its name to  Wilsons. Part of the Job of CAMRA was to educated  people palates. It took 48 years now even young people know real ale is a living organic drink not  carbon dioxide filled brown water.

of course it tastes better in EIRE........

I drank loads of it at the wharf tavern near Dublin docks....

Currently some of the best beer in Thailand is called Old Speckled Hen. A British real ale  from the midlands

I would chracterize my wife and myself as real gourmets who have eaten everything from self-caught rat on a stick up to the highest Michelin decorated restaurants in France and Spain etc.

But it is never too late to get our palates educated further - so - where do I get this Old Speckled Hen ? Then I know how a real British ale should taste. After all I am only German and know little about beer (sorry - ale, real British ale to be precise).

OSH, used to be leg collapsing stuff but they reduced ABV from 5.2% to 4.5% in the keg version to make it more sessionable according to Moreland brewery who brew it. Hi

???????? Thank you. How about your Speckled Hen ? Any hint where this could be tasted in Thailand ? On a side note I regard Weihenstephaner Vitus to be one of the best beers available in Thailand. It is also available for sale - at least in Pattaya Central Festival (TOPS on the ground floor).

No it isn't. Guinness Cold was on sale in the UK 15 years ago or more. The pump was the same design but with a blue stripe around it.

I used buy OSH in bottles in the U.K., I am sure The Punch and Judy pub opposite Caddy Shack sold it, I am not sure if it is still a pub though.

Thanks but could you help me being a bit more precise ? Where in Pratumnak and what expat shop do you mean ? To my knowledge there are none on Jomtien itself. We live at the end of Na Jomtien and shop in Villa, Friendship, Tops especially for Japanese food,, Big C Extra, even at times at Siamburies and at the Time Out Bistro and rarely in this shop on Thepprasit opposite the bus terminal (forgot the name). For Indian ingredients in a soi opposite Soi Diamond near the Hindu temple. Then some markets like in Sattahib. A secret tip if the strawberry season arrives. ????

Witherspoons on Soi Buakhow have a number of British "ales" in cans/bottles available including Abbott Ale which I personally prefer to OSH. Unfortunately no draught at this time.

They are however hidden in one of the fridges and you need to ask for the specific menu........

Yes it is... they had 2 separate pumps at many pubs. One was Extra chilled IIRC.

My local pub in the U.K. had 2 Guinness pumps. One was chilled the other was extra cold, they removed the chilled pump as they said there was no demand for it.

Might be a seasonal thing.... I used to go for the Extra but I had been traveling a lot and developed a taste for colder beer.

This is due to the better water they have in Ireland.

Guinness used to be brewed both in Park Royal, London and in Dublin.

The water of course was different, so some said the Liffey gave the Dublin brew a better taste.

Now Park Royal has closed so U.K. Guinness comes only from Dublin.
