Sanook Thai Caption: Grandmother hit and killed

Sanook reported on the death of a 77 year old pedestrian who was killed while crossing the road in Muang district of Amnat Charoen, NE Thailand.

She was hit by a Mercedes Benz being driven by an employee of party list MP Khathathep Techadechreuangkul who was also in the vehicle.

It happened on the Ban Kai Kham Road while the MP - who is also the head of the Pheu Chart Thai Party - was on his way to Ubon Ratchathani airport.

He was in a rush to get to the airport to board a plane to take him to Bangkok for an important House meeting.

He said that he did not flee the scene and would pay full compensation to the victim's family.

He said that the car was being driven at only 70-80 kmph when the old lady crossed the road.

His employee tried to brake but hit her.

He said he called rescue services who picked up the lady.

He continued to the airport.

When his employee went back to the hospital to check on the victim she had died.

Sanook said that the incident happened on Tuesday.

70-80 KPH, but the article doesn't say what the speed limit is at that location.  To continue on to the airport and to brush it off as "I'll pay the family compensation is pretty cold ... I know he wasn't personally driving (as indicated in the article) but where is the compassion or the level of responsibility.

And before I get jumped on, I'm not suggesting that this is a Thai problem, I would ask the same questions if it had happened here in Australia.

Aiding someone hit by a car you are in? Or attending a meeting?

Why is it that those article writers are compelled to mention the type of car that was involved in the accident? like those who drive MB and get involved in traffic accident are worse than those who drives Toyotas? poor MB, getting bad wrap just because they're politician's favorite car's brand...

Failing to stop after hitting an ELDERLY PEDESTRIAN at a ZEBRA CROSSING because he had a flight to catch.

How low can you get?

We have all had Thais be late or cancel appointments because of 'traffic jam' or some other weak excuse. So, how couldn't he say 'Sorry I'm late, my driver killed a poor old lady who was trying to use a zebra crossing. What did I miss at this ever-so-important meeting?'

Where did you get the information regarding the old lady at a Zebra Crossing?

I expect he was in the back of the Merc, so how did he know

that, in hurry to catch flight ,did he tell the driver to put his

foot down, "she's only a peasant ,need to catch my flight,

will pay her family a few bob , it will all be ok, ,77 years old

compensation will not be much.

I cannot even believe that an excuse like this would exist. It paints a very damning picture about Thai life and society if the normal Thai citizens don't rally for justice. This MP is one very mentally sick individual of he really believes that catching a flight was more important than stopping to potentially save an injured person.

And who in Thai society will be a voice of reason to condemn this disgusting act.

"He was in a rush" therefore he told his driver to keep the speed at only "70-80 kmph".

Read the story twice to be sure I had the facts in my mind .

The driver has obviously been ordered to continue by this inconsiderate piece of garbage who is a member of parliament.

The driver was obviously in a big hurry to get this piece of garbage to the airport to reach his flight .

Tells you much about the mentality of the elite in Thailand

My deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased.

remember where you are, life is cheap in Thailand and can easily be bought off.  terrible excuse from a terrible human being.  it's like " i drive a Benz so F you"  here.

Perhaps he can get a doctor to testify that she had an existing condition that would have caused her to die that day anyway.  That should significantly reduce any compensation.

(I was once on a jury in the US.  A woman had been placed on a stretcher and it tipped back while she was laying on it causing her to slide off.  Her head hit the wall right at floor level and injured her neck.  Part of the hospitals defense was having a medical expert declare that she had a pre existing condition and her neck would have gone out the same day anyway.)

So he did flee the scene?

Important House Meeting!

Is that the same excuse compartment as " brake failure"

House meeting saving a life?

Now it is clear should be for all Thai citizen to comprehend your life doesn't matter!

Reason nothing is done and reason deaths will continue on the roads until ALL of them are replaced!

How low can you get?  He didn't fail to stop after the accident, neither was it wasn't reported that she was using a crossing.  He called for assistance and waited (see the photo of him at the scene with the rescue service helping her?).

car was only 70-80 kmph after breaking and hit the old lady little bit. Please make Corona Test, maybe she did died on Covid during her hospital stay

He stopped, called the rescue services and waited there for them to attend to her (see him in the photo?).  What is so "very mentally sick" and "disgusting" about that?

Clearly, you need to read the report again.  He stopped, assisted her by calling rescue services and waited there until they were able to attend to her as shown by the photo in the OP.

Well what a load of pile on " knock down the tall poppy syndrome "

The facts ( as reported )

* He was in a hurry to get to the airport ( never done this you key board warriors ).

* He admits his driver hit the lady who was crossing the road . The driver was DRIVING , so if anything happens is culpable.

* They stopped and called authorities.

* The lady was taken away injured. Sad but true.

* They continued to airport.

* The driver returned to the hospital and discovered she is deceased. He was the driver remember.

* The MP has promised to pay up   , even if the lady walked in front of the car... can't be fairer than that.

Phew , that feels better.

He didn't leave until she was being assisted by the medics whom he called.

Or maybe because he's not medically trained, he's pictured there, with the medics helping her.
