Champion Charged After Wakeskating On Flooded Road

BANGKOK-BORN World Wakeskate 2022 Champion Daniel Grant was summoned and charged with endangering vehicles and people for wakeskating on flooded Phaholyothin road, Sanook.com said this afternoon (Sept. 13).

 

Grant, 24, posted a video clip of himself wakeskating on floodwater in front of Bangkok University in Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani on Facebook

 

Accompanying caption says, “September Week 1 ???? Bangkok is flooding! ????#WakeskateWednesday in the streets!”

Was he charged because the police saw the video clip, instead of catching him in the act?  It appears that these police spend their time with social media online, then need to find something like this to justify their "effort."  If indeed, as the linked article states, "there were no cars passing at that time," how could he be properly charged with "endangering vehicles and people under Highway Act of 1992..."?  It looks like a case of tunnel vision--the tunnel being that created by the camera which filmed him.  Had officers actually been present, it seems unlikely they would have acted against him.

Surely on a weekly basis they could entrap at least 50% of the drivers on Thailand's roads under the same act.

The police doesn't need to monitor social media, the so-called netizens do that egregiously and report to the police who is obliged to follow up. Just like in any country.

 

You only need to look at the pictures to know that he lied, there are several vehicles around him.

 

Why do I have the feeling that all shields up to defend the guy is because he is farang?

Maybe.  I've seen people throw trash beside the road in the presence of police officers, and the police officers did absolutely nothing.  Would that be different if they had seen a video of the act?

World champion given suspended jail term for wakeboarding on road

 

 

World wakeboard champion Daniel Grant has been given a one-month suspended jail term and fined 5,000 baht by the Thanyaburi Provincial Court, after he was found guilty of traffic violations and obstructing traffic by wakeboarding on a road in Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani province last Thursday night.

 

The 24-year-old Thai-British wakeboarder posted a video clip on his Facebook page showing him wakeboarding along the Phahonyothin Road, in front of Bangkok University, following a downpour which partially flooded the road. The clip generated many pro and con comments among netizens, prompting the Khlong Luang district office to issue a summons for him to report to the police station to acknowledge the charges against him.

 

He reported to the Khlong Luang district police station yesterday (Tuesday).

Says he was being charged with putting cars and pedestrians in danger.....but.....the flooded roads are doing that...and who's getting charged because they did not prevent this flooding in the first place?

A one-month jail sentence for this "crime" seems rather steep.  Good thing they suspended it.

 

From my POV, he was doing the townsfolk valuable service.  When the cars try to rush through the flooded streets too quickly, the waves they create can increase the flood waters that top the barriers citizens have set up to protect their homes and businesses, e.g. sandbags.  Furthermore, a large vehicle, say a pickup truck, creating a large wake can cause the water to exceed the level of the floorboards in smaller cars which can have their electronics mounted at floor level.  This ruins them, and they can end up stalled in the road.  That could backup the traffic far more than any road surfer ever would. 

 

If he was playing in the roadway and caused the traffic to slow down, he was doing more than the police were doing to promote road safety for all involved.
