Prince William just inherited a 685-year-old estate worth $1 billion

Royal wills are never made public. That means what happens to much of the Queen’s personal wealth following her death last week will remain a family secret.

Forbes estimated last year that the late monarch’s personal fortune was worth $500 million, made up of her jewels, art collection, investments and two residences, Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham House in Norfolk. The Queen inherited both properties from her father, King George VI.

So in your view anyone who has owned property, including the castles and homes that the royals have, should not be entitled to the monies they are worth and it should go to the people, even though it was the royals relatives in the past who bought and paid for those properties.  Oh I get it you believe that because taxes levied on the farmers and so on paid for these properties then they are owned not by the Crown but the people...try again.

Far as I know the state pays for maintenance on the buildings, but the amount the royals earn the country in tourism would make that worth while.

Get rid of the royals, and all the pomp and circumstance goes away too. No changing of the Guard, no Household cavalry etc. Be interesting to see how much tourism falls if all that happens.

From 2019 Queen Elizabeth II’s county home in Norfolk is undergoing extensive renovation works, with huge scaffolding covering part of its facade. And she will likely pay for it herself, as Sandringham House is owned by the Royal Family and not the Crown.

When I lived in the UK in the 1980s my 3 bed semi cost me 72,000. My ex wife sold it in the 2000s for 175,000.

 

According to rightmove the average house price was 325,000 over the last year.

 

Properties in Chaplains Avenue had an overall average price of £325,000 over the last year.

Overall, sold prices in Chaplains Avenue over the last year were 17% up on the previous year and 14% up on the 2016 peak of £285,000. It is just silly money. The lady across the road from us was an original buyer and paid a whopping 3,995 for it in 1964. Nowadays it is probably worth closer to 400,000.

 

At least my ex was free to sell it.

 

Prince William can't sell it, mortgage it or rent it out. There really is no value to him. It is just an object.

Imo very little. France hadn't had a monarchy for +/-230 years but it's the most visited country in the world.

Presumably that is its market value.

However it is not Prince William's to put on the market.

 

Whilst the estate surely returns a healthy profit, it's revenues are subject to tax, it plays a very significant role in the economic life of the West Country, including providing significant opportunities to young people to make a living from farming which would not otherwise be open to them.

 

It is overall very beneficial to the rural economy of much of England.

I think France does have more to offer the UK, it has better weather and beaches, I suspect much of its tourism is those from around Europe visiting its beach towns and resort areas for there two week annual break.

He will pay tax on any private income from the estate, but I believe Royal Family are execempted from inheritance tax..

You may well be right but the original contention was that the loss of the monarchy might have a detrimental effect on the number of overseas tourists visiting the UK. I do not believe that this is the case.

Born into wealth, unelected and very entitled, and above the law....while huge percentage of the country living on poverty struggling to pay for their heating or food......sure they 'deserve it'. ????‍????
