The first cruise ship to arrive in Thailand in three years docked at the Patong pier in Phuket today (Monday), to allow about 800 passengers to come ashore for a one-day sightseeing excusion.

Phuket Governor Narong Woonsiew and head of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Nanthasiri Ronnasiri, boarded the ship, Spectrum of the Sea, to welcome the passengers.

The ship, which had arrived from Singapore, is carrying over4,500 passengers of 55 nationalities, but most are from Singapore, Malaysia, India, the Philippines and Indonesia.

That's the largest ship I can recall mooring in Patong Bay.

Only 800 pax came ashore?

800 passenger is less than 18% of the ships population coming ashore. I guess Thailand's reputation on it's treatment of tourists is getting out.

Surprised the water is deep enough for that huge ship so close to the beach ...

I don't know about the ships in SE Asia, but in North America and Europe, generally no since about 6 months ago. As of about a week ago, most lines have dropped the requirement for staff to wear masks, although many still do.

Surprisingly large and newly built to be on the Singapore run.

Tonnage even higher than the QM2.

Photos can be deceiving. They anchor about 1 1/2 kms out in deep water.

They don't dock at a pier as stated in the OP.  Passengers are ferried in.

Only when using muffled oars.

I'm sure the taxi mafia was out in force to meet them (and beat up any "unauthorized" drivers who had the temerity to show up and earn a fare).

3,700 had a better quality of entertainment and cuisine by remaining on board
