Crime Five Drug Runners Killed in Firefight with Military
Picture courtesy of Naewna Five suspected drug traffickers were shot dead in a fierce gunfight with soldiers in the jungles of Fang District, Chiang Mai, in the early hours of 2 August. Authorities seized 1.35 million methamphetamine pills and a cache of homemade firearms and equipment following the clash. Acting on intelligence received on 30 July, the 3rd Cavalry Company of the Chaiyanuphap Task Force deployed two patrol units to monitor key smuggling routes along the Thai-Myanmar border in the Doi Ang Khang and Ban Luang areas of Mae Ngon subdistrict. At approximately 02:40, soldiers encountered a group of 6 to 8 individuals carrying large rucksacks through a natural mountain pass. When ordered to stop, the suspects opened fire, prompting a 10-minute exchange of gunfire. No military personal were injured. Reinforcements were quickly sent to the scene, including two additional patrol units, two unmanned aerial systems and a military sniffer dog team. Once the area was secured, soldiers searched the site and recovered nine rucksacks, each containing approximately 150,000 methamphetamine pills, a total of 1,350,000 pills. Troops also seized one homemade shotgun, one homemade handgun and two mobile phones. Five bodies were found at the scene. All weapons and narcotics were turned over to Fang Police Station for further legal proceedings. Maj. Gen. Kidakorn Chantra, Commander of the Pha Muang Task Force and Director of the Task Force’s Narcotics Suppression Operations Centre, instructed Col. Amnat Wachirasaksopana, Commander of the Chaiyanuphap Task Force, to coordinate the field investigation with relevant agencies. Maj. Gen. Kidakorn also reiterated the army’s zero-tolerance approach to narcotics along Thailand’s northern border and encouraged local communities to report suspicious activity via the Pha Muang Task Force hotline. According to official statistics, between 1 October 2024 and present, the task force has conducted 360 drug suppression operations, arrested 381 suspects and seized over 153 million meth pills, 145.8 kg of heroin, 8,192 kg of crystal meth, 93.5 kg of opium and 696 kg of ketamine. There have been 49 armed confrontations resulting in 33 suspect fatalities. Authorities estimate that the methamphetamine alone seized in this latest operation would have generated over 32 billion baht on the street if it had reached Bangkok.
