How can a man charged with rape not have his Passport taken off him and not placed on a no fly list?  This is a almighty screw up by the UK justice system.

How do you know he didn't use a fake passport, or enter Thailand illegally?????

Below is a snippet from Reddit.  Passports are technically property of the issuing government, not considered personal property of the holder.  A passport can be suspended or revoked at any time, even without notification to the holder.

Who owns my passport? : r/LegalAdviceUK - reddit
If you want to get technical, the government owns the passport. However it is issued in the name
of the Queen to the person stated within (you). The government owns the passport, the same for
licenses.
The person who it is issued to is allowed to possess it.

Probably scarpered almost immediately, but the poor writing makes it sound like he was sentenced then fled.

It seems that bumbling idiocy is not the sole character of one country only and it's everywhere, even in a country that suppose to know better...

As luck(?) would have it there was this bit of news in Australia the same day as this UK screw up was reported here.  The Sri Lankan was denied bail.  Obviously it depends on each case.  That the UK guy was granted bail I get.  Not considering he was a flight risk was a monumental fire truck up.  At the very least he should had his Passport removed.

I'm not sure how the UK authorities could know he was in Thailand, he might have flown on to Laos or Cambodia.

They don't know for sure. All they say is that "Police enquiries suggest he has fled [...] to Thailand."

There's a life lesson here. Always stay and defend yourself. Rape charges are often on the fairly flimsy evidence of false accusations, but if you flee and they hold it in your absence, you are screwed.

It was all investigated and many of the offenders were prosecuted and jailed

Very good point. Can anyone be convicted in their absence? Doesn't seem right that you haven't had the opportunity to defend yourself.

You fly to Thailand without a passport?

No but you could first travel to other countries, then enter a non-eu country by land, and then fly to Thailand. Nobody would know for this level of crime.

Let's see how quickly the extradition application works, just locating him means not a lot.  Vorayuth has not been found guilty in court of anything yet and the country that he's in probably doesn't have an extradition treaty with Thailand.

Totally different case and scenario, as Vorayuth has multiple nationalities, he is not wanted on any except the Thai one. He does not travel with his Thai passport either.

It's not that difficult to do this, you can get a carribean passport within 6 weeks from Dubai for around 150K USD. You never even have to visit there, you leave Dubai with the new one. These passports have easy access to USA, Schengen, Commonwealth countries etc.

So when doing a crime, you just need to make sure it's enough to buy that one lol.

Obviously you can, else everyone would go into hiding. You have the opportunity to defend yourself when you have been served, it is your own responsibility to make sure you show up.

Many who fled here think that their debts are forgotten too, not knowing they have been convicted by civil court already, and it just waits for them to one day return / show up.

That's in some ways worse, because a debt of 200 pounds could accumulate into 5,000 pounds with all the endless court costs, processing charges, fees etc.
