Yes many of those as well. There are some though as long as you have the right format and business brain who own successfull bars, some even a chain of them.

Does it matter what visa he has I don’t think so if he’s got people running it on his behalf he’s just the investor he’s only 49 so he won’t have retirement ( extension of stay )

I've read too many tales of woe on this forum ( and TVF ) from people that left their brains at the airport.

 

I learned the lesson very early on. I stayed at a nice resort on Chaweng Beach where a farang had built a lovely teak room for yoga classes.

Went back next holiday and both farang and yoga room had vanished.

Never did find out what happened, but I'll bet he didn't go voluntarily.

Most foreigners who go into business in Thailand have never run a business in their life, don't have any business sense and don't do proper research. Signing a lease for only a year is a NOGO to start with.

Always an exception to the rule, but get back to us in 10 years and let us know how it's going.

What defines a successful bar owner in your mind. Bar can be full every day but the total cost can be higher than the revenue.

I've often been asked about how to start a business in Thailand. They've usually already been reading and start going off about the minimum number of Thai hires to get a work permit, leasing a location, the paperwork, etc.

 

I tell them to forget all that. Get a good Thai lady. Make sure she's up to the job, i.e., not of college age and glued to the phone. Find a spot in a busy local market. Find whatever food's not already being served, and get your lady started on that. I've done it on two occasions with my wife so far. 300-800 baht daily rent. 30-40k start up cash for materials and the first batch of food. She's made it back after the first month. Not as exciting as a bar, but a lot safer.

I think you're describing Chuvit's Sukhumvit Square, Soi 10, bar area that was cleared during the night in 2003.  Definitely not Washington Square, Soi 22.
