Chinese could flock to "paradise" and "cheap" Thailand

Naew Na wasted no time in reporting what we also have at ASEAN NOW about the post-Covid opening up of China at the weekend and the consequences for Thailand.

 

They went with a headline that said:

 

"Not just tourism - Chinese want to live in Thailand because its cheap".

 

Al Jazeera had a report about Chinese people wanting to not just visit Thailand for a holiday but move to the kingdom long term. 

 

Many view Thailand as paradise, said the report, with an increasing social media fueled trend known as "run philosophy".

 

This seems to be getting away from China and setting up elsewhere.

 

Thailand is seen as the ideal location. 

 

Al Jazeera reported that Thailand was top of the Chinese real estate buying list. 

 

People felt they would be more rewarded in Thailand rather than in China. 

 

Chinese emigrants to Thailand have taken to social media to sing the country's praises.

 

It is claimed that daily life is cheaper and things like international schools and care for the elderly cheap.

 

Meanwhile expat reaction to our story and possibly having new Chinese neighbors was muted.

 

Perhaps most hadn't got up yet.

 

One wondered where he could find a cheap international school in Phuket.

CCP has real hold over corrupt generals. Thailand is their backyard for several centuries so it’s just matter of time that it becomes a satellite colony of CCP.  Very soon strict policies changes would make it impossible for Cheap Charlies to stay in Thailand.

Cheap that's a laugh  with the way the value of the Thai baht continuing to go up it wont be for much longer . it will be the same as before the pandemic with the baht so high they will price themselves out of the bright future they desperately need .

cheap??? hotels are even more expensive than in Paris...last year we bougt a bottle of Ec ian in Paris for 50 eurocent.. that is 18 THB the exact same bottle of water here is 65 THB....and than we don't even talk about wine

Friend just tried to book flights to Phuket from California, cheapest fair was 2800 USD. She then tried to find hotels around where she wants to train at and they have nothing available. So just where and how will this be a cheap trip to paradise for the Chinese

Some things are expensive here I agree, but IMHO hotels are not one of them, in my own experience Thailand hotels' quality/price is very good comparatively.

Ahhh well there's a surprise,one of the chief complainers on this forum complaining again.If u don't want to pay 65 baht for a bottle of water get the one for 7 baht or go to a refill machine and get a liter for 1 baht.jazuzzzzz Christ some people are unreal.

 I don't complain about the water.It is just a  comment   and a comparisonthat cheap is not always cheap in Thailand...especially importe products are very expensive... but apparently it hurts you that someone sees these things and you not

there will be a "special" Long Term Visa or "special" Resident Visa for them and the right to own land and house.... am just speculating but maybe not far from the truth, we (westerners) are "temporary" guests with  not many rights whatsoever

No, hotels are not more expensive than Paris, class for class, irrelevant though that is. Obviously Evian is cheaper in France being that it's a French product. What did you expect? Go price a papaya or a mango.

In Laos, the Chinese simply moved in with sufficient numbers and took over. Bought property, opened businesses at every level, and made the north of the country an extension of China. Now, they're working their way south. They will not bother with any visa except maybe the initial tourist visa. They'll just come in and do what they please. Only Chuwit recognizes the threat openly.

Cheaper in Thailand for the Chinese.  Maybe if they moved to a  rural village in Thailand.  But not a city.  I’m not talking about real estate.  Just normal expenses.

     You can always find this or that product which is cheaper in one country than another country.  You've found a brand of water that is more expensive in Thailand.  Safeway, in the USA, offers two brands of fish sauce.  One costs $5.79 and the other is $8.49.  You can buy a bottle of fish sauce at Big C for 33 baht, about a dollar.  So, we have a brand of water that's cheaper in Europe and fish sauce that's more expensive in the US.  Is either meaningful?  No. 

     It's more important to look at the big picture and focus on a wide range of everyday expenses when a comparison is done.   I was just on a website--livingcost.org--that allowed me to type in two cities and compare the cost of living.  I live in the beach city of Pattaya and I compared the cost of living to the beach city of Myrtle, Beach SC, in the US.  The cost of living in Myrtle Beach was 3 times higher than Pattaya.   That's a meaningful number, far more important than a small saving on a certain brand of bottled water.

I did a lot of price comparisons between Thailand and UK back in 2019 before we left Thailand.  From our weekly shop to fuel for my vehicle and vehicle prices. It shocked me that food had become more expensive in Thailand (we shopped in Tops and Big C). When I purchased my first vehicle in Thailand in 2005 "Triton 4x4" it cost the equivalent to £11,500 and in the uk it cost nearly £30k. Then when I replaced it in 2012 vehicles that were manufactured in Thailand had become several thousand pounds more expensive in Thailand than the same vehicle exported to the UK and sold. Even motorbikes used to be cheaper in Thailand but now are more expensive in Thailand than their exports to the UK.

 

Where I saved money on fuel in the uk compared to Thailand was simple I don't drive a 3lt SUV in the uk (uk 2 cars Rav4 and a Honda jazz). We don't drive as far in the uk for shopping, school and social.
