Video: What happens when a 69 year old man parks and leaves the engine running.....

A video published by Thai Rath showed a 69 year old motorist parking at the Jiran Nakorn sports center in Hat Yai, southern Thailand.

All seems normal on the CCTV as what appears to be a Totota Altis is reversed into place.

The driver emerges to get a sunlight shield for his windshield from the back seat.

But as he is fixing it in place he suddely reverses at speed then goes forward also at high speed crashing through a temporary barrier, into two motorcycles and piling into a pillar.

A still shot showed the damage to the front and back of the vehicle.

Prasit at the scene said that the driver was only slightly hurt but people had run out of the way for their lives and a migrant worker was hurt.

The driver had apparently hit the gear stick while fixing the shield then panicked.

Thai Rath said this was a lesson in turning the ignition off.

NO. The title should read: a 69 year old man parks and doesn't put the transmission in "park". Maybe the reporter is not a driver.

Yes,he clearly hit the accelerator while in R when fiddling about. But how he afterwards contrives then to shift it into D AND then stomp on the accelerator is beyond rational explanation- other than " Thai driver !" ????

I think the reference to his age is unfair. I've seen worse from 30 year olds. At 81 years old I recently gave up driving after I felt my reactions were no longer as sharp as they should be. Never had an accident in a lifetime of motoring, including rallying and club racing. This guy's biggest mistake was leaving his engine running, and panicking when then inadvertently setting the car in motion.

Somebody steals his car?

And like the "Tomboy" who dies in an accident recently (what difference does sexual orientation have in a fatality), what difference does this man's age make. The actual issue is that so many Thais don't seem of have driving skills.  That's an issue of training and practice, not age.  69 years old?  That's not that old in this day and age.

Good for you.  At 70 I can now envision a time where I'll have to call it quits.  Not now, but as you said, your reflexes, vision, and attention just change.  There comes a point where you really need to hang up the keys.  When that day arrives?  I guess I'll hire a driver.  Wife doesn't drive.  She's a great 'back-seat driver' but the thought of actually driving scares her s***less.  So?  Kudos for knowing your limits.

Thais can't park their cars full stop.

I sit in wonder at the antics in my local BigC car park.

It's a form of entertainment to me.

You’d only ever had to have driven an automatic to know that,so common knowledge . It takes the form of a button on the side of the shifter to be simultaneously pressed to unlock .

It’s all a misunderstanding. It wasn’t his fault. In fact he didn’t do it. It was a farang who got into his car and did it. The video was edited omitting the full story. He’s working on his defamation suit.

Strange that someone with a camera picks up on this car for no particular reason and follows it. No reason I can see to lock onto this driver. So why him?
