Thailand’s general election, set for May 14, is likely to be dominated by old grudges between the military/royalist/establishment and populist opposition parties – the same has been the case for every election and conflict over the past two decades.

The election will determine whether a democratically elected winner can stand up to the pro-military order or work with it, which will determine the political and economic trajectory of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

The election contest will be between the rural-based political juggernaut founded by telco tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra, and the conservative, Bangkok-based political elite, dominated by pro-military forces that have ruled since the last coup in 2014. The Shinawatra-backed parties have won every election in the past 2 decades and are set to win the 2023 election, potentially in a landslide.

Peau Thai will win the election like they have won every election for the last 20 years.

If they just win Prayut will rig things like he did last time and declare himself the winner.

If they win in a landslide they will take power for a while while Prayut and co come up with something to take back power.

Thaksin dragged millions of Thais out of poverty. And they wont forget it. Thay love him.

Daughter is quite hot and will be the hottest PM in the world.

Let us hope it is the opposition. Anyone but the current army goons. Anyone. I may not agree with all they stand for, but anything but the status quo, who are moving the nation backwards, at an alarming pace.

I think a major problem with a lot of thai politicians is that they are afraid of change. They seem to be so scared that PT will do a better job than they did (tried), that they'll go to any length to stop them winning.

To be honest it's difficult to see any type of fair election happening. Ultimately the man in the palace is going to have his opinion and that'll be that.

A fugitive criminal promised the people that they will get double the current minimum income in a few years.

He forgot to mention that with that also all the prices will go up and Thailand will be less competitive compared to the neighbor countries.

But the gullible Thai voters will obviously vote for the criminal and his promises. Sad!

Yet, little [if any] attention, reference or attention is offered of any such real "opposition" or alternative by the always abiding and controlled Thai mainstream press.

The never ending cycling rhetoric of presenting the same worn out players and misfits doesn't appear to be terribly democratic.

Who is the fugitive criminal? If you're referring to Thaksin he hasn't been tried in court yet. Maybe the entire senate should be charged with treason.

Maybe you should have followed the news over the last years. They would know that he was tried in court and found guilty - several times. That is why we can officially call him the fugitive convicted criminal.

I'm hoping Thaksin wins it....or rather his daughter...and he comes back to lead the government here in Thailand. The let's have a new constitution that does away with this abomination of an appointed senate.

Applaud your reasoned sentiment, but such acts require traditional approval and blessings - and that will never happen, as such defeats the whole ideals of their oligarchical existence.

Who wins and who is the PM are two different things. The senate is crucial to either some sort of peace or a total revolt by the populice. Interesting really how the corrupt cronies in the senate will decide the near future of Thailand. I would not be suprised to see Prayut put back in as PM by his corrupt senate mates leading to mass disaffection leading to another coup. The milatary is in control and wants to keep that control. Will there be international obsevers for the election? Nup. No there will not be.

Mmmmm really? And people who hold coups and rewrite constitution, Control the courts at the end of a gun and then rub the country's nose in it as they magically use TAT's calculator to make 8 into 4 or something like that!!!!! Mr T who I disliked had the country at 14%+ growth......
