What breed of dog is best security to protect ones house in Thailand?

My soi dog that I adopted ages ago is getting on and might pass this year. 

 

We bought land and and will build a new house in a semi remote area. If Im planning ahead now, what breed of dog do you think is best to leave on the verandah everyday for security. Options to exclude would be:

 

-pitbull- nutter of a dog that can turn on its owners, no way

-german shephard- Too intense and full on. I will never forget visiting an ex gf back home several yrs ago and I jumped into the pool to get away from her GS and the crazy dog jumped in after me swimming after me and scratching me with its claws

- Doberman: Too whiny and needy. Leave it at home all day and it would be miserable. Get home and it would want to jump on the sofa with me. Dogs are dirty animals. No way

 

If you have any ideas about suitable dogs or breeds to exclude please make a comment. Im wondering if I should get a couple of male street dogs. Cheap, lazy and low maintenance

Medium sized X-breeds (soi dogs) can be very effective and are, as you say, low cost / low maintenance.

 

In realty any dog will make potential intruders think twice.

 

Even our two chihuahuas are effective alarms and set off the "real" security - geese! No intruder in his right mind will take on an annoyed gander!

Not useful when they put a hat and mask on. 

 

A barking dog or 2 is definitely a deterrent. I saw a youtuber visit his gf's parents house in issan. Inside the yard 5 dogs come running over. Its a fine option for a security system

Their Meowing is not too loud and you can still hear them inside the house.

You don't say how much land you are going to build your house on but if it's practical for you I'd go with Crossy's last statement about geese,if you had a small flock including a gander you could eat the surplus eggs (and also have the occasional gosling for dinner!)

I'd rather get robbed than have to put up with dogs!

Any dog that barks, whether territorial, or scared of it's own shadow.  Huge (you clean up after) or annoying little yappers.

 

None will 'protect' the house.  Steak with drugs or poison will handle any dog.

 

They are alarms only, and don't expect them to protect you.  Which is fine, a I'd hate to see one hurt/killed trying.

 

Just make your house look more secure and more hassle than your neighbor's.   They'll move on to the easiest target.   

 

We have wall & security cams, if that doesn't deter them ... oh well.   As long as we're not home, it can all be replaced.

 

I always leave a door or a window unlocked when not home.   I'd rather them just walk in, instead of 'breaking' in.  IF they are on the inside of the wall, they're coming in and got all day to do it, out of sight.

With that attitude towards man's best friend you might be better off with a goat. Or, maybe a monitor lizard. I doubt that with your attitude any dog would want to jump on the sofa with you... you really don't strike me as a dog lover.

Insurance only covers you if there are signs of forced entry. I hope no one here thinks this is good advice and tries to follow it.

Thanks @PouatcheeI was trying to think of a polite way of saying the same thing to the OP. If I was him I would go with @Crossy's suggestion and get some geese.

Geese have been used as guardian animals for centuries. Why? Because they are uniquely suited to the task. Not only are their piercing honks excellent alarms, but they are instinctively protective and more naturally suited to guard work than humans, or even dogs.

23 yrs of insurance premiums I didn't pay ... not sure they can rob us of that amount.

8000  bht a year, fire and theft insurance. Really not that much for peace of mind. Insurance has saved me from ruin more than once. The only insurance that sucks here in Thailand is health insurance. For that I am one of the lucky few. I have gvt social security.

The Thai dog breed Bang Kaew is probably the best domestic guard dog for you.  They are both loving [BUT - only have one master] and exceedingly territorial.

 

A pure bred [with pedigree and Bang Kaew Kennel Club registration] is going to set you back about 10,000 baht and they need looking after.  My Bang Kaew is excellent but has to have top quality food and is regularly checked by the vet.  Expensive - yes, but Thais are very, very wary of Bang Kaews and will not go near where they are.   

 

If you have one they will be a great deterrent but be aware that you do not let them loose outside your property.  Anyone attempting to access your property could be subject to attack - and they do not let go!

I don't 'walk' my Bang Kaew.  We have a rai of enclosed landscaped garden which is plenty of room for him to run and play with out Miniature Pinscher.

Open land i prefer fixed up females as they stay home.

Males will wander.

Our new pup who will take over from the old girl in the near future.

Our Bangkaew is observant & protective.....He absorbs all the normal neighborhood sounds and doesn't react....

If a strange vehicle or person goes by he's there in protective mode....

Other than that he's a teddy bear to be around....
