Why didn't you read the report?  He did not have a belt, he had a cord in the waistband of his shorts.

Aussie kids head there on their end of  school vacations to party and most times are neglected by the authorities who are supposed to take care of them

Parents are supposed to take care of kids. Adults take care of themselves.

seems a strange decision from a young man to hang himself after being incarcerated for a misdemeanor .

A young man who was off-his-head intoxicated, you left that rather important part out.

All criminals have mental issues. Why else would you engage in violence and get arrested?

In my opinion ,  engaging in violence or getting arrested is not necessary indicative of either being a criminal or "having mental issues"   However committing suicide , if that's  what happened, is irrefutable proof of a serious psychological problem

An Australian man died inside the detention room at Patong Police Station in Phuket, southern Thailand. Police say that he hanged himself with the rope from his shorts, reports KhaoPhuket.

Police said that 31 year old Matthew W. of Australian nationality was found dead inside the detention room at 12.45pm, having been arrested for being loud and disorderly on Sunday night.

At 5.45am, police were informed that a foreign man intoxicated by alcohol or drugs was yelling and disturbing guests at a hotel near Patong Beach, on Thaweewong Road in Kathu district, reports KhaoPhuket.

Superintendent of Patong Police Station, Pol. Col. Sujin Nilbadi, and deputy superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Somphon Surin, went to investigate.

Detention Room , Rope !

WTF

in prisons here the prisoners use pakomas/sarongs to hang other inmates and it is always suicide. The victims are never alone but there no witnesses. Apparently there is privacy in the Patong Station.

An autopsy is required .It may not of been a hanging .

An autopsy is always conducted on foreigners dying in Thailand according to a post I once read. I imagine it would be to satisfy embassy requirements.

Issues with alcohol (maybe drugs), inappropriate behavior, lack of self-control and awareness.

Amazing you guys think they arrest random peace loving tourists who are sipping on lemonade and reading the bible.

The whole purpose of having cells with CCTV is so they can be monitored 24/7  ......   obviously doesn't happen in Thailand police jails.

Normal safety procedures require a thorough body search and removal of belts, shoes and any form of clothing that could be considered a weapon or cause personal harm  .....    obviously doesn't happen in Thailand police jails.

it was being recorded or did u miss that bit of info?

Your version of what is normal safety procedure is based on what exactly? One of your netflix police series perhaps?

Your type jump all over these "opportunities" to have a pop at RTP yet fully expect their unwavering help when it suits you and you need them.

This idiot was causing mayhem and they rightly detained him. He was probably under the influence of something.

This incident is tragic but it could have been avoided completely if he hadn't been behaving like a w____r in the first place.  Actions have consequences in real life.

ALL Falang are sent for autopsy, even if you die from a long illness in hospital.

Not quite true,  farang who are under the care of a hospital and die in that hospital are not sent for an autopsy. There might be an autopsy at the hospital, however.

I guess there is another version to the events that comes much closer to what really happened. Who believes Thai police?

Yes, I recall reading that now you mention it. My point should be something like all foreigners who die outside the auspices of a hospital are sent for autopsy. In any case, this case would be an automatic autopsy.

A terrible tragedy !

About time Thailand especially Phuket who get a lot of Aussie tourists have proper jail procedures and social workers and counselling on hand to supervise these poor kids who end up intoxicated

BS, when you taken into cells, belts and shoes are taken away, so he could not possibly have a rope in his pants, duty officers are NOT supposed to have lunch breaks, and when they step away, someone must man the post, in addition all the cells have CCTV, so there should not be any mystery, if indeed he hung himself, CCTV would have clear footage of all of it

The CCTV footage should show him hanging himself? if it was working,

I have a case against a Thai passing a bad cheque, we managed to get the police to arrest after 2 years, during the 2 years the offender paid the investigation office 200,000 bhat to loose my file, he was transfer maybe for other problems we will never know, however last year we  managed to get an arrest warrant issues with all sort of promises issued however when the signing of the arrest warrant was to be signed the station chief refuse to sign it off, then the arrested offender were allowed to escape for a few week, its been almost another years, i told the new police office i was going to a higher authority, his reply it would be dangerous for me top do that, i have left Thailand because of that issue, we are 7 million bhat out of pocket, i plan to return and seek more experience legal assistance however, the offence is a serious offence of fraud.
What result can  we expect the guys has hung himself the police most likely though he was not worth much if they done there job right they would have his wallet, probable too busy trying to work out a scheme how the scam the poor kid.
