So what?   Non-UK residents such as the OP is asking about cannot.

I still have house in UK

So what?  How does that help expats in Thailand who are not currently UK resident?

  • Some UK banks have an offshore branch based in the Channel islands - I bank with HSBC expat in Jersey. The sterling account functions the same as a uk account, with sort code, direct debits etc.

So what?  The OP is in 2023 wanting a new account, he is not you in 2010 when things were different.

Their second page does ask for a UK address, at which the applicant will be checked, obviously.  Being a UK resident is not a "theoretical" requirement, it is an absolute requirement for a new account.

Selective quoting again.....

There is, much as you may not want to admit it, a possibility to potentially game the system and that would be up to the OP @Pumpuynarak or whoever if they wanted to try it.

I would suggest that anybody with a Barclays account should look seriously at finding a way to open a new account as it looks like they are going to pursue closing any and all non resident accounts - based on their own web site - https://www.barclays.co.uk/important-information/living-outside-the-uk/

I also have an account with Nationwide, using a family uk address - not had any issues so far after 15years overseas.

Me too.

I use my son's address details.

17 years here and no problems.

This strikes me as more of a rehash of existing changes affecting account holders living outside the UK which have been around for some time, as opposed to new changes which could lead to account closures.

You may well be correct but was reminded from this very recent thread -

You could be right........but non-resident account holders should have a Plan B.

How much money do you need to have a Coutts bank account?

We specialise in helping international clients to invest or borrow. You need at least £3m to become a client, depending on where in the world you live.

500k GBP but mustn't let the balance drop below 300k or you can have a mortgage with them for over 500K.

They make no check, you simply need a UK address for the card to be sent to, with no proof required such as utility bills that you actually live there.

Don't be so naïve to think that a bank would not do any checks on an applicant's provided address!

Regardless of that, Monzo won't allow new accounts from Thailand.  Try to log in after they send a login email and the following message is generated (before any personal information whatsoever is supplied to the app)...

"Unfortunately we cannot offer you a Monza account,

We're afraid we can't go into more detail why we can't odder you an account.

We assess every application using the details you've given us".

Apart from downloading their app and providing an email address Monzo had no other information from me, yet my application could not go any further.

Particularly relevant selective quoting, in actual fact.

Perhaps you could indicate what part of my comment was inaccurate selective quoting?   They do ask for an address, that address will be checked and being UK resident is a specific requirement.  If you can falsify the information that you provide the bank, if that's what you're suggesting, and it works, good for you.

If by "you" you are referring to me than perhaps you need to reread what I wrote as I never suggested that I would do it or had done it......

So if you did mean me then that is just a complete unfounded assumption and typical, IMO, of your non- ending irritating nit picking in this particular thread.

No, I meant "one" but that word looks so pretentious.

By "non- ending irritating nit picking" [sic], I presume that you're referring to the 100% accurate banking information that I posted, yes?  Funny how contradictory (but correct) information here is seen by you as "never ending, irritating, nit-picking"!  Point out where I've provided inaccurate information.

Thanks for all your helpful posts guys, its appreciated. I can't really see a way out of this problem if HSBC ever decide to close my account. Here's hoping that day never arrives.

I got one last year so I know exactly how the process works, I was back in the uk for a month, applied one day, received the card the following day and have the app on my phone. I provided no utility bills,  from memory a picture of me holding my passport ID page. I have had no issues with the account.

If I wanted other than just a normal account with them, or overdraft etc, then they require further information.

When replying to me, someone that experienced actually opening a Monza account so know what it entails, chill out mate

Revolut also works if you still have a UK address you can provide and use that with a Thai phone number. They will send activation codes etc. to the Thai number and transactions work fine. I don't think they're actually a bank though so maybe less stringent?

AS per KingKenny's post, I was able to open an account with Halifax when I was back in the UK for a couple of months earlier this year.  I used my hotel address, showed my passport at the local branch and received a debit card through the post, plus access to my account online.  (I don't actually need such a bank account, but it made sense to open the account since it was easily available).

You may have noticed the following:-

Eligibility

You may be required to provide ID and proof of address if needed.

You may not be eligible for some account features if you remain resident outside the UK.

Let's just check a few things before you apply

Where do you currently reside?

This is the country / region of your current residential address.

Thailand

We're sorry

Due to cross border rules and / or HSBC's policy, this application is only available for residents of a limited number of countries / regions.

However, if you're travelling to the United Kingdom, you can visit a local branch to open your account when you arrive.

Then you should also know that Monzo (not Monza) will not open new accounts from applicants in Thailand.  I know, I tried it again yesterday.  Chill out.  Mate.

"I got one last year so I know exactly how the process works, I was back in the uk"

There you go, then. Seems that you do not "know exactly" how the process works for non-UK residents in Thailand.

This is a thread about opening new UK bank accounts for non-UK residents, it is not about the easy process of opening a new UK bank account for a UK resident while the applicant is in the UK.

You're right, it is getting boring, very boring.  Those accounts have some serious conditions attached to them that restrict who is eligible.

I clearly said I opened it when I as in UK, read and comprehend. You are too busy trying to pick fights

at no point did I say I knew how it worked for Thailand residents, I am a Thailand resident, I clearly say I opened it when I was back in the UK. Stop looking for fights, do yourself a favor, read what is written then digest it.
