France's Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot waded into a growing tussle between the European Union and Elon Musk's Twitter on Monday, as he threatened the social media platform's access to the bloc.

In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August.

"Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies," said Barrot. "Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn't follow our rules, will be banned from the EU," the French minister added.

No, he's not, read it again.

He's pulled out of some 'voluntary code'. Is it really voluntary if it's compulsory?

Twitter approved 83% percent of censorship requests under Musk

Despite Musk presenting himself as a free speech advocate, who almost immediately fired content moderation staff, Twitter satisfied the majority of requests for content restriction coming from countries like Turkey and India that are frequently accused of limiting freedom of speech. If prior to the purchase of the platform by the American billionaire, Twitter agreed to 50 percent of such requests, in the last six months, this number has risen to 83 percent, according to the analysis of the data by the technology information portal Rest of World.

He did say in a tweet that he only did this where the entire platform would be censored if they don't comply they the demands.

The EU thing is optional, so I expect him to make them force him to remove it - i they do that there's going to be big trouble all over the EU.

I have a feeling that 'Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot' of France will not be allowed to dictate policy for every EU member state regardless of how important he thinks he is.

He also said.

“By ‘free speech,’ I simply mean that which matches the law,” Musk said in a tweet last year about his vision for Twitter. “I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.”

The law European Digital Services Act is there for a reason.

Good of this French Minister to take up the fight on behalf of the 26 other countries in the EU.

I wonder how they found out he was handling the matter.

Maybe he sent them a tweet?

with starlink up and running that threat is meaningless

The EU is NOT just France and France does NOT speak for the whole EU though it seems that Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot' of France believes that he does.

They probably have the power to do so.

And no, the US is not a democracy.

The European Digital Services Act, is not only about Twitter.

Google, Micro<deleted> and many other companies will come under scrutenity at end of August.
Most of the big tech companies are acting against the EU laws on the PRIVACY by use of cookies and tracing peoples behavior without their prior approval.
Most of the big tech companies are not paying their due taxes trough all kind of loopholes.
These loopholes will be closed after August.
For once, a good move from the EU that I applaud.

Multinationals doing as they are told and losing profit?

Good luck with that.

No surprises here. The EU loves to over-regulate, ban, restrict. It's their MO. It's no surprise they are terrified of a free speech platform like Twitter.

If I was Barrot I'd be more concerned about the infighting resulting from the corruption scandal engulfing the EU, oh - and the fact that it's largest economy just went into recession.

I guess it would be nice to bury all that, hence the ever increasing restrictions on social media. Maybe they will go the way of China and ban the lot and replace it with their own version of WeChat?

All these countries on your list are fake democracies.
Example: Belgium is a country I know very well and where 99% of the people voted for a Right wing party 4 years ago, but instead are governed by a mixture of Left wing parties.

Germans people are dissatisfied for the same reason, being governed by an incompetent green party.

It's not because it's written in some website that it is TRUE.

So come up with the proof and the links to prove him wrong.

I assume that you are exaggerating for effect but that is not even close to the truth.

The Belgium government is comprised of a 7-party coalition of unlikely partners (2 Socialist parties, the Christian Democrats, 2 Green parties and 2 Liberal parties) which commands a majority in the Senate, and represents a majority of the voters.

Worryingly, the right-wing, anti-immigrant Flemish nationalists polled well but they were unable to form a government.

Any alleged factual claims must be supported by a valid link to an approved credible source.

In the Netherlands death threats to politicians are being regularly made via Twitter. Also there measures against Twitter are looming.

Lordie, the lefty liberals have their panties in a twist as their end-to-end oversight of socials media begins to unravel.

The Old Twitter was a censorship cesspit. Babylon Bee banned because their satire hit too close to home. Trump and Tucker Carlson banned. Understandable you don't like them, but take away their right to communicate? Really? And the list goes on.

Not just this numpty French Minister who's terrified that Those Whose Voices Must Not Be Heard won't be silenced any more, but a whole array of power-hungry pols. Kick these weasels off Twitter instead, Elon.

UPDATE: Twitter Fails to Remove Hate Speech by Blue-Check Users: Report

image.png.eb927118a1e5dca0fb8a13d308ddbcb4.png

Twitter is failing to remove 99 percent of hate speech posted by Twitter Blue users, new research has found, and instead may be boosting paid accounts that spew racism and homophobia.

Researchers at the Center For Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) flagged hate speech to the company in tweets from 100 Twitter Blue subscribers. Four days later, they say, 99 percent of the tweets were still up and none of the accounts had been removed.

The tweets, which included examples of neo-Nazism, antisemitism, racism, and homophobia, violate Twitter’s own hate speech policies, the researchers say.

WashingtonCNN —

A Fidelity fund has slashed its estimate of Twitter’s value amid ongoing chaos at the company, implying the social media platform may be worth only a third of its value compared to when Elon Musk acquired it in October.

According to a monthly disclosure, Fidelity’s Blue Chip Growth Fund reported that its stake in Twitter was worth $6.55 million at the end of April.
