COVID makes comeback in Thailand as booster fatigue leaves door open

Thai authorities are stepping up campaigns encouraging people to roll up their sleeves and get booster shots as COVID-19 makes a comeback.

 

The campaigns are designed to combat a new surge in cases, attributed to factors such as students returning for the new semester – but most importantly people’s declining immunity.

 

“The prime minister is worried about the elderly and vulnerable groups. They should take a booster shot every year,” said Anucha Burapachaisri, deputy secretary-general to the PM and acting government spokesperson.

 

He added that even young people should get booster shots, which are being offered for free at state hospitals.

“Don’t forget that COVID-19 can still be deadly,” he emphasized.

 

Deaths surging again

 

Deaths from the disease have soared more than threefold over the past month, according to official data.

It appears that Thailand is not alone with rising cases.  It appears they are increasing in many places, but it was to be expected.  Since Covid is now endemic we will see these fluctuations yearly during the certain seasons which we see increases for other illnesses occur.  Could be a myriad of reasons.

For a second I had to remind myself that it’s not 2020. I get the need to advocate for vulnerable segments of the population, but the reminder to youngsters that covid can still be deadly loses my interest — and my support.

 

Why? Because it’s only another half step to panicked reimposing of lockdowns that have caused mental health issues among the young, deprived people of their livelihoods, etc. We’ll be cleaning up after the harm done by a “bbbut covid can still be deadly” mindset for decades.

No thanks, i'll passs. I  was in Laos the other weeek and hardly anyone were wearing masks. The lcoals were just gettig on with their lifes as if Covid never even existed in the first place.

Exactly, not worth mentioning it. But the vaccine business is fading and they need a new booster to it.

Why not try a state hospital as the article suggests? Got my booster at the local state hospital, for free, last time.

Maybe if they made the bivalent vaccine specifically developed for Omicron readily available then there might be more booster uptake? The additional protection given by yet another jab of the old vaccines developed for the original strain is probably very limited once you've had a couple.

I am as well. The recovery rate from alcohol is higher than from suicide.....But if there is a new lockdown soon it is too much for my liver

The Omicron strains targeted in the current bivalent vaccines are already NOT the ones currently circulating around the world, which predominantly now are the XBB variants.

 

I believe, the plan among the various major governments and vaccine manufacturers is to have an updated XBB variant focused vaccine deployed in the coming year as a once-a-year shot.

The bivalent vaccines are pretty readily available in Bangkok right now...and in some places in other provinces:

As I posted on another OP on Tuesday, the stepdaughter was sent home as well as the rest of her reduced class from school, as over half were out with Covid. She ended up with Covid later that day. Moving forward to today, we received a call about an hour ago from the stepdaughter who let us know that her father, her stepmother, Grandfather and Grandmother are all very sick with Covid.  In fact her Grandpa has been hospitalized as he is having a hard time breathing.  The step daughter sounds horrible still herself, she indicated she had a fever for the past 2 days but today it is gone. The hospital is seeing many new patients now she said, and Grandpa was moved ahead of the que as he needed oxygen. This is in the Sai Mai Area of Bangkok.  For those of you who think Covid is nothing and is not a problem, you better think again.  It does affect children as well.

The current vaccines REDUCE the risk of you contracting the COVID virus, especially in the months immediately post injection.

 

And, longer term, also significantly reduce the risk of either getting seriously ill or dying from COVID, compared to those who have been unvaccinated.
