LIVE: Trump indicted by federal grand jury in classified documents probe, sources say

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a federal grand jury after a months long investigation into his handling of classified documents after leaving office, ABC News sources say.

Details of the indictment were not immediately available.

In a statement on social media, Trump insisted the case was a "hoax." He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

He wrote on social media Thursday that he is "INNOCENT."

The only reason i see for Trump to throw his hat into the ring to run again, was that he thought it would insulate him from being prosecuted for his crimes.

I think he viewed the documents as his personal items.

An off topic deflection post attempting to drag Biden into the OP has been removed.

Continue trying to derail and hijack the OP and you will be issued a suspension.

Well even though Miami-Dade County went for Biden in 2020, jury pool there would certainly be less hostile to Trump than  New York City and environs.

Whilst I believe this is politically motivated, I would be glad to see Trump stand down from politics.

He's had his time, the future is DeSantis. The US needs fresh, younger blood than the current selection of stumbling, mumbling geriatrics on offer.

Jack Smith's not finished yet, still has his investigation ongoing with Trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Then of course there's also the separate Georgia case.

Television news in the US is already distinguishing it as "the DC case," today it was about "the Florida case."

You may be correct with that assertion.      Trump's mind works in a bizarre way.    He surely suffers some degree of mental illness which allows him to lie with total abandon.

From The Independent:

"Among the Republican’s most repeated untruths was that his administration “built the greatest economy in the history of the world”. That phrase, according to the Posts’s analysis, was used at least 493 times.

Another favourite – and his second most repeated falsehood – was the former president’s claim that tax cuts introduced by his administration were the biggest on record. "

I'm hopeful that at some point in the not too distant future, Trump will face the full consequences of his actions.

Money, as it has in the past, should not allow him to be above the law.

Well that would be another fine answer to his mental acuity which he thinks he has over everything. "If I just think about it .........."

Money should never allow people to escape their wrong doings.  Thats the difference between White Collar crime and Blue collar crime.

My daughter did her Masters Thesis on the inequities between those arrested for White Collar Crimes and those arrested for Blue Collar crimes.  Waiting on the publisher to put it out as a must read for students getting a Masters in Business, Economics, and Finance, it is in publication thanks to the Universities Regents who saw it's potential as a learning tool.  Anyone else who did what Trump has done would already be in jail.

Back on topic, Trump has tried to peddle his influence for decades and this is why he thinks he is untouchable "Me, Who did nothing wrong"

Literally caught with the goods in clear violation of the law and he insists that he did nothing wrong.

The saddest part is that his base will believe him.

Not talked about much, but there is the question of "what did he want to do with the documents?" and the "who else got to look at them?"

I would guess a prime candidate for looking at plans for war with Iran would be Trump's sweetheart running Saudi Arabia... Trump sucks up to them like a walking street hooker to an admiral during cobra gold. How many photos/photo copies were made? No mission impossible stealth strategy needed to get a gander

Trump had the means and opportunity to commit these crimes. I'd really like to know the motive

It's like a criminal, when caught with dope in his pants, saying these are not my pants I just found them on the ground and put them on because i needed pants.

And in Trump's world that's probably true.         He's unlikely to come to grips with reality during his life but hopefully those who rabidly support him may realize some day just how toxic he is.

However, they will never admit it and neither will he, no matter the outcome.  He can sit in prison like the other Criminals who fleeced millions from people.

Appearing Thursday night on CNN, Trump attorney James Trusty said the indictment includes charges of willful retention of national defense information — a crime under the Espionage Act, which polices the handling of government secrets — obstruction, false statements and conspiracy.
