Immigration Bureau Chief says he’s preparing for a possible return of Thaksin who faces arrest

Thaksin Shinawatra (centre), the former premier, according to his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on Wednesday, is still intent on returning to Thailand on July 26th as previously announced. On the same day, the Immigration Bureau Chief, Police Lieutenant General Pakphoomphiphat Sajaphan (inset), told reporters that his police agency was coordinating a potential response to the former prime minister’s return which would see him arrested on foot of warrants. He said that while the arrest of Mr Thaksin would be controversial, particularly on social media, his officers would strictly follow procedure.

Ex PM Thaksin says he wishes to return to be with his seven grandchildren while describing his current exile in Dubai as akin to a larger prison just without walls. He claims he is ready to surrender to authorities.

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau Chief Police Lieutenant General Pakphoomphiphat Sajaphan, on Wednesday, told reporters that his officers were coordinating a response to the eventuality of the return of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to Thailand. Mr Thaksin’s daughter, key Pheu Thai leader, Ms Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on the same day, told reporters that although her family was concerned at the prospect of her father’s return on a personal basis, the decision was one he had to take alone. She confirmed that, at this time, he has not decided to postpone his intended return on July 26th next.

There are indications that the family of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is concerned about the possible impact of his planned return to Thailand at the end of next month which is due to coincide with Mr Thaksin’s birthday on July 26th.

I don't understand why he is so intent to return... his grandchildren can go visit him at any time they want.

Because obviously it's all about him and not about the grandchildren.

But the gullible Thaksin fanboys will love the story of the caring grandfather. He always wanted to be portrayed as the selfless supporter of the poor and innocent...

Maybe he should propose a deal: He returns all the billions and he will be allowed to live somewhere in a village in Isan together with his family - working on a rice farm.

That could be interesting.

Which is more likely the case.

Anyway.....don't think Lt. Gen Pakphoomphiphat's call is official, as he'll rightly be taking his orders from higher up.

Now that Pheu Thai is back in a position of power in the coalition with Move Forward, he has a local in to negotiate!

If you think that is a punishment, why don´t you try it yourself. I did it for 3 seasons just to know what it was all about. Actually a quite free life, not as hard work as I thought and quite interesting.

And in his view entitled to special treatment.

I wonder what his and his family's thoughts (especially his wanna be prime minister daughter) are on 'nobody is above the law!

For what reason?

What do you think the general view by most Thais is on special treatment (it does seem quite prevalent and widely accepted)?

His return will be high-risk on all sides I should think. Not just for Thaksin but also - in the current political context - for the dinosaur bully boys.

Whatta shame.

The frothing Thaksin hate mob on here put me in mind of those in UK who are obsessed with "boat people".

It's as if these posters didn't have other problems like housing, energy bills and corrupt police to get excited about.

He does not care about grandchildren he just wants to get back into the game.  He is losing control of the PT and the people in the north and wants to get it back so that he can gain more power.

Think about it he can fly wherever he wants go wherever he wants and do almost anything he wants right now but says he is in a prison?  give me a break.

I wonder if his daughter really wants to be PM, and be a servant of her father?

Maybe she is happy that she wasn't elected. Maybe soon she can live a quiet life away from dirty politics.

Let’s be honest, you have absolutely zero knowledge of what Thaksin cares or does not care about…., all you have are your inbuilt biases and prejudices and a lack of awareness of opinions being subservient to facts.

Or maybe she begged Thaksin for the opportunity - you just don’t know do you.

it's just a bs reason, he wants to stir up politics here, because only his daughter won't be enough, her father needs to coach her!

but when in prison there won't be much coaching...

He is 74, been in exile for 17 years and is clearly homesick. There is no mystery here for anyone who is not a junta loving, anti democracy Thaksin obsessive.
