Lost in Translation: Thai Police reckon Japanese attempted rape claim a misunderstanding

Officers from Chana Songkham Police Station believe that the attempted rape accusation reported by a Japanese woman was a result of a misunderstanding. They explained that the action in question was a part of the massage technique, and the officer involved had already engaged in discussions with the foreign woman to reach a mutual understanding.

On Monday, June 12, a Japanese woman took to social media to accuse a masseur at Thong Ou massage shop near Khao San Road of sexually assaulting her during a session in February. The woman also complained Chana Songkham Police Station officers neglected her complaint.

 

The superintendent of Chana Songkham Police Station, Sanong Saengmanee, looked into the incident the following day and reported that the CCTV footage had been deleted, leaving the officers without concrete evidence of the assault.

Sanong yesterday told the media that the police, along with Move Forward Party MP Paramart Witthayarak, had personally spoken to the Japanese woman regarding the incident.

Following the talk, they discovered that the issue was rooted in a misunderstanding. The masseur performed his duty according to the massage method, but the Japanese woman, who was not familiar with the service, had mistakenly interpreted his actions as an attempt to rape her.

 

Sanong revealed that he and Paramart worked together with the massage shop owners to agree on measures to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future.

 

Sanong urged all massage shops to provide detailed explanations of the service process to their customers prior to the massage. He emphasised that the massage shop should maintain an open and well-ventilated environment and install security cameras.

 

Moreover, Sanong stated that the staff members should attain the necessary massage standards before providing their services.

 

Sanong also warned every massage shop not to offer sex services as it spoils the reputation of Thai tourism. He said Thai massage should impress foreigners and encourage them to return and reuse the service more often.

 

Meanwhile, the President and Chief Executive of hiva-Som International Health Resorts, Krip Rojanastien, disclosed to news agencies that the wellness tourism sector in Thailand is currently facing a labour shortage after the pandemic. Krip added that the global wellness business had a high demand for Thai massage therapists.

Always ensure the first version of the story is airtight. The best spokespeople usually reply at the first news conference: “no comment until the investigation has been completed”. 

 

I believe the “misunderstanding” explanation has been overplayed.

Just as bad, the police are actually publicly parroting that nonsense? And before even being able to speak directly with the victim, because they couldn't seem to readily come up with a Japanese interpreter?

 

All in all, it sounds like a thoroughly shoddy failure of law enforcement...not surprisingly.

The officer said that without CCTV, evidence could be manipulated. There may have been a misunderstanding but we can't put our finger on it.????

The scary part is, the Thai police locally there apparently believe they can get away with making these kinds of rubbish public statements/claims, and people are supposed to believe them?  It's a farce.

 

The Japanese lady here needs to go the Japanese version of Charlene An, and not let them get away with it... But I'm guessing, the victim here will just disappear as will the case at hand (so to speak....)
