Having been the owner many Toyota Pick-ups in Thailand (2 x Mighty X, 3 x SR5, 1 x 2.9 import and 3 x Vigo) both 4 wheel and 2 wheel drive, I have always considered myself to be a Toyota man. However, a few months ago, I was walking through one of the local shopping malls and Ford were doing a promotion on their, at the time new Next Gen Rangers. They had a model on display that I just fell in love with straight away, looked at it, sat in it, asked a few questions and I was taken with it.

 

On leaving the shopping mall, I decided to call in at the Ford Dealership just down the road and was allowed a couple of test-drives. First model I was given was the Raptor (1.7M+) Yes nice, very nice with more than enough power but with a very hefty price tag that I could not justify spending on a pick-up truck. Next, the Wildtrack (1.3M+) .... again very nice, 4wd which I didn't really want/need and a bi-turbo engine. Looked around the showroom and there was an XLT (<1M) on display. Enquired about that, got details, another test-drive and it was the vehicle for me. Only 2L Turbo, 6 speed A/T, more powerful than my previous 2.5 Vigo which only had 4 speed A/T and far far better equipped. I said I wanted one in Black and they added quite a few extras more than usual (due to their promotion). 2/3 days later Ford delivered it to my address personally and I became the proud owner of, dare I say it, a Ford.

 

Had it 7/8 months now, not one problem at all with it and still very happy with the vehicle indeed. Good or bad, I know they get stick off some people but if you're into pick-ups here, what are your opinions compared to what else is out there?

If I was in the market for another truck I go for the V6 Ranger.

Personally I prefer Ford over Japanese cars due to comfort. as I am relatively tall. The ride in Ford is also much smoother and at least it seems safer.

 

However, Ford in Thailand does have a bad reputation for after sales service. Many first hand stories from wife about refusing to honor the warranty.

My Ford Ranger is a 2001 model, 4 door, 4WD, turbo diesel 5 speed manual with close to 500,000 km on the clock.

 

If I had the money I would buy anther Ranger without hesitation.

 

I wouldn't bother with a Raptor but opt for the 2,2 turbo diesel 10 speed A/T 2WD. The Raptor is a bit too much for me and I rarely used the 4WD on the one I have now.

 

I came in as a very practical pickup and came in very handy when we were building the house. At one point I had modified it by putting a 1,200 litre water tank in the bed with a small Honda water pump. That was a time when I needed the 4WD, but that was a few years ago.

 

It has been very reliable and apart from the routine servicing stuff like tyres, brakes, batteries etc, I replaced the radiator once and both front suspension legs.

 

I bought it new and it has been a reliable friend for nearly 22 years. It starts easily every day and I still get about 12 km/l and it uses very little oil even now.

 

As it is an older model we get it serviced at the local guy in the bg village, When you open the bonnet you can see everything, and a computer is not necessary to talk to it. 

XLT Ranger 2010 - change the oil and filter at regular intervals & have changed the tyres only once. No problems with it ever. Oh, forgot, 2 new batteries over those 13 years. ????

I think the new XLT Rangers are good looking, not really a fan of the Raptor or Wildtrack looks. I've had two Ford pickups and one car and they were all great.

I suppose it all boils down to the dealership. I have had an XLT 2.2 since 2016 and whenever I call them, they are always accommodating me, and always honoured the warranty during the 3 years, just had to pay for the labour.

I paid 800k baht for my XLT 2.2L Turbo, 6 speed manual back in 2016, still in love with it today, has never let me down, been all over Thailand with it and have about 235,000 kilometres on it, never had a break change believe it or not. Two sets of tyres, 3rd due shortly, regular oil and oil filter changes at 15,000 kilometre intervals externally after warranty, front wishbone, a pulley, a fan belt and a set of windscreen whippers that I can think of, all done at Ford. I purchase my own oils on Lazada and take them to a local mechanic who does the oil change and puts in a filter, all for 450 baht, Ford of course have big overheads and would charge a he-ck of a lot more for the labour and oils.

 

Was thinking of an upgrade, but why, when it's still driving like new.

Got a great deal from a dealer ship in BK

Loads of extras for free.

So far truck has been awesome

Very comfortable and I am getting 37mpg around town.

Fords are obsolete  as soon as you  buy them and seem to have a recall rate higher than most. 

No problem with the Ranger or the dealer,when ever we go in for service

the main dealer in Bangkok calls us the next day to ask if the service was up to standard and if we have any further inquiries.

Have you ever owned a Ford Ranger?

 

For something that is according to you, obsolete, mine has done a great job over the last 22 years and nearly 500.000 km.

 

Mine has never been recalled that I know of.
