After Pita, Pheu Thai gets to run the show

The spotlight has now turned on the Pheu Thai Party, which is likely to take over from the Move Forward party in forming the next government, after they lost their bid to nominate their leader Pita Limjaroenrat as prime minister today (Wednesday).

 

Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew reconfirmed the unity of the eight political parties in the coalition pact, despite the latest setback suffered by Move Forward, and hinted at his party’s readiness to take the lead in forming the coalition.

 

Chaithawat Tulathon, secretary general of Move Forward, admitted that Pita’s failure to be nominated as prime minister has opened the way for Pheu Thai to be at the core of the next government.

 

“We need to talk with Move Forward and the other partners, to sound out their views on what steps are to be taken,” Cholnan told Thai PBS when asked about Pheu Thai’s political plan.

Cholnan said that the formation of the coalition and the nomination of the prime minister should be agreed upon before next Thursday, when the Parliament meets again.

PT has kept to the agreement. Srettha should now run as a PM candidate from the existing coalition of eight parties. As long as the future government reflects the election results of the population, ok. The senators cannot afford to saw off Srettha like Pita before. Would be nice to see where the Senate stands in the third approach. For the sake of the  Thai people or not.

Hope you're right. But PTP's own past is not exactly pure as the driven snow ...

 

In any case from now through to May next year is going to be very interesting to watch. In May the Senate's time is up, at least as currently constituted. It is - at least to me - entirely unclear what happens after that.

I don't get why the senate were allowed a say in whether Pita could stand a second time. They are not elected Parliamentarians and this wasn't a vote for PM as such. But I obviously don't know the ins and outs of the clause in the constitution that gives them such powers.

 

Anyway, there's a precedent set now: if Sreetha gets the coalition nomination and fails, he won't be able to stand again in the event of a new coalition. The worry about that is who would stand? And this is where the likelihood of the olld guard regaining power comes into play.

If the Senate would not aprove Shretta, then they would oppose the will for change of 2/3 of the population. First Pita then Shretta. That would mean that the will of 2/3 of the Thai population would be suppressed. Then FT and PT supporters would probably join forces on the streets. I don't believe that the Thais will silently allow themselves to be robbed of the election results.

I hope it not comes to bloody protests, but I don't know any Thais who let their butter be stolen from their bread.

A minority government cannot pass legislation in Parliament if the majority of Parliament is against it. Although the Senate could order its preferred candidate in, but it would not result in a functional government.

It will be clear..  PHeu Thai goes for Pm but the senators will not accept a party that works together with MFP, with a result that if Settra in this coalition is nominated and he don't get enough votes, he can't have a second chance too and so Anutin and Prawith will be the new PM..

Can MFP dissolve the coaltion? I think this would be very interesting. It would make parliament unworkable or force PT into a coalition with the military which would be the end of PT. Just a thought. Of course it probably doesn't matter. One way or another the military will take control again with coup no. 14.

It has been discussed many times. Other parties were also practising vote buying. Its effectiveness has also been questioned, in particular considering the high number of votes (ex Yingluck got around 40% more votes than Abhisit).

I agree with you that both groups are crooked (to a certain extent). However, I prefer the one which always submitted to the vote of the people, and could be voted out.

OK so PT now has the chance to hold the PM chair.

 

I hope and I pray that they will sooner rather than later take serious action to change the current appointed to an elected senate.

 

Won't be easy but I suspect they will try.

I believe we are in "the calm before the storm" period. Pita screwed up his chances through either stupidity and/or naivety but in the process, the people's hopes were raised. They will not take this failure lying down. A storm is in the making.

Which rather assumes that they will take any notice of Parliament!

 

They have ignored them and their electoral mandate to select a government. Why should they be remotely bothered about taking any notice of them when it comes to governing?

True, I suspect that the regulations in place will mean the senators must be appointed, but by who?

 

Would be nice to get clarity on this point.
