Haven't been to Cambodia PP now since 2017.

It had changed a lot since my 2005 visit.

 

I remember about 10 years ago all the Thailand expats were going there to live after immigration changes.

 

It appears now after watching a YouTube video that according to the presenter that costs to live in Cambodia are 50% higher than Thailand, obviously depending where you live in Cambodia

 

So what's so good about Cambodia for expats , obviously the financial cost nowadays is not one.

What's the long term visa situation?

,but I don't want to name the YT presenter but he said the costs were that high compared to Thailand.

He was also talking about the bar girl situation and saying that was much much higher because of the Chinese influence.

 

So any expats from Cambodia what's your thoughts on the financial costs ,medical , nightlife and just living there 

Been there done that and my overall opinion is it is basically a hell hole.  For those that like it, by all means go for it.  Other than cheap and a few nice beaches no thanks...and can find cheap and beaches in Thailand with a bit of looking.

stay away from snooky and your good to go.

Chinese men are not interested in girls, so I don't see why the Chinese presence would effect girl prices.

Thailand is about the maximum level of poverty that I can live near without it depressing me too.

Our driver slept in his car when he wasn't driving us. We bought him a $6 pillow. He wept with joy.

 

Like I said, a downer. If Bangladesh has cheap sex and a doable visa, would you hit that?

And what about expat living in Cambodia?

 

I guess it's Siem Reap,although the YT presenter said Kampot was the new expat area.

 

With the Chinese development I guess there would be modern medical centres , shopping malls etc

I hear that mostly Chinese are controlling of the bar scenes in PP.

Was in SR last October. Dead-empty, many hotels shuttered. A nice condo is $200 a month. Enjoy that street and a half of good, not great restaurants in the micro-downtown.

 

Vientiane felt like Times Square after Siem Reap.

More like $30 women and $250 rooms ...... when I was there in 2020.

But plenty of places with 50c beers and $1 cocktails.

Ever seen a lone Chinese in Pattaya? ????

Maybe some Taiwanese or Hong Kong Chinese, but no "real" Chinese men travel as FIT travelers. They cannot go without their flags or teddy-bears-on-a-stick.

In the times I've visited agogos post-Covid, I find just the opposite: lots of young and middle aged Chinese are barfining, and the women chosen run the gamut from light-skinned to mocha, clean to tatted, natural to lab-enhanced. I've even seen Chinese couples barfine women for "purposes unknown".

 

The fact that China has 30 million more marrying age men than women (due to the long-held one China policy and preference for males) seems to be driving carnal behavior.

Filthy place, rubbish everywhere, but i hear a one year visa is just a one off payment, no 90day report, and apparently work visa is easy. Laos is paradise by comparison. 

A good source of info are the forum pages of Cambodia Expats Online.

 

I have read lots of griping about how more expensive Phnom Penh is these days: supermarkets because a fair bit of food imports are directly from Thailand; eateries are now running $5 to $10 a meal; hostess bar girls asking $50 to $100; 50 cent beers are double that now; cigs cheaper though; there's no city transit still so it's all by  tuktuk or tiny golf cart-like Passapps (like Grab); streets after midnight are rather dangerous due to bag/phone snatches (even in daytime), drunk driving in extreme ("foreigners" -- guess?); and apartments for residents are rocketing upwards of $400 to $600/month. 

 

Long-stay visas are a breeze if you're old enough 55 and up. Tourist e-visa is $35 online, get a letter and show it at airport and then at arrival you get a small stamp. You can also get an Ordinary visa on arrival and extend for 3, 6 or 12 months. Latter is about $290. 

 

And last, I like the friendly Khmer people who also seem to pick up English reasonably well.

Sure they do, but do it in a more private way. Loads of Chinese businessmen order 3 girls to their room when in BK.
