Child seat vehicle laws go into effect in Phuket: 2,000 baht fine

Buckle up kids! The public – particularly parents – have once again been reminded about the new safety regulations regarding child seats in vehicles within Phuket. As relayed by the Phuket Info Centre today, the National Police Agency’s legislation demands the use of industry-approved child safety seats. The fledgeling law, enforced from August 17, mandates that all children below the age of six must occupy these safety seats while riding in vehicles.

The police have highlighted that the introduction of this rule transfers the onus of ensuring children’s welfare in vehicles, particularly in the event of road accidents, directly onto their parents. Monetary penalties of 2,000 baht are set to be implemented against those who disregard this new compulsory child seat rule.

This notice comes after an earlier endorsement by the Royal Thai Police, ensuring that all passengers, including those in public transport or taxis, should wear seatbelts starting November 6. The statute was formally publicised in the Royal Gazette on August 8 and was authorised by the national police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas, under Section 123/3 of the Land Transportation Act, reported The Phuket News.

That seat is not properly anchored and is more likely to cause more harm to the child.  Proper fitting is vital.

Best of luck with that one.

How is a child seat going to be fitted on the family motorcycle with Mom and Dad? Or does this only apply to cars in Phuket?

Another pie in the sky law? The same as passengers riding on pickup beds, crash helmets to be worn, and the rest. All to be ignored? Until laws are enforced the people who come up with these ideas are just whistling in the wind and living off the taxpayer.

Will safety belts be installed in the back of pickup trucks?

The child on the front acts as an airbag.

So will all taxis, mini buses, big busses, and tuk tuks have child seats fitted ?

A law requiring seat belts to be installed in all mini bus vehicles is already in law. There is no law requiring the wearing of face masks yet many Thais do. If this mindset could, somehow, be applied to helmets and seat belts it would be a winner.

It looks to be fitted the same as my Mothercare Madrid model.

What is wrong with it's fitting please?

Was there not a post last week saying that if you do not have/cannot afford a child seat, then the normal seat belt can be used?

What is the law for over-6 year olds?

Who will enforce this 'law' ?

With all I saw in Thailand, in traffic, I conclude, traffic laws are not for Thai citizens.

3 kids on the motorbike without helmet still fine ?
