  • We haven't forgotten the 1000s of extrajudicial killings,. We haven't forgotten your hatred for foreigners.   Taksin arrives at Bangkok Hilton is what we want to see.

My TGF (from KK) is offended that he seems now in lockstep with Prayuth, after all that baggage all around, and this would be my line of thought; there's no way he would be returning without some sort of understanding with the real powers, and it would have to include some settlement of the next government. I hate to say it, but Prawit looks increasingly possible--but I know nothing.

Indeed, including some substantial monetary donations he would have made to ensure a smooth return.

I will break free from the usual reasons,as to why he is back.

My take..

The worst thing you can do to a thai is to separate him/her forever from his country.

They cannot function abroad.

Thaksin suffered for 17 yrs in the wilderness.

Worse than death (for a Thai)

Now...regarding his return.

Obviously a deal has been made

Part of the deal is his abstention from politics.

Im not too sure about that. All the negative stuff for me came after he was gone.

Things got much harder for use starting with him and continued that way through successive Governments, accelerating again under the Army.

Prior to Thaksin it was a 'free and easy' environment.

Me too, I can only guess they weren't here in 2003 ish. Possibly, they are married to farmer families. There is ABSOLUTELY no logical reason a foreigner would want this guy back!

There is the only one reason that counts: From all the crooks posing as politicians here, he was the one who got elected -- twice. And would be elected a third time possibly. And since Trump/Putin/Johnson/Bolsaro/Buhari "crook" has a positive connotation. After him there were only clowns.

Since it was reported years ago that Thaksin's Thai passport was cancelled, I assume he flew in today using his Montenegro passport, and received a 30 day visa exempt stamp. Curious whether Thai Immigration will treat him as a foreigner then....will need to file a TM30 from the Corrective Services Dept, apply for a Thai Elite Card, or LTR etc. Although in such scenario he'd be unlikely to fulfil the requirement for a criminal record check. -

Just heard on BBC that he has got 8 years. That didn't take long, but I guess they have had many years to contemplate the sentence.

Will he serve it? We''l see, but I doubt it. When is it the King's birthday?

As the de facto leader of his party it is inevitable that he will still wield influence behind the scenes. But he won't be standing in an election again. It remains to be seen if he can maintain his popularity after breaking pre-election promises and leaving the MFP out in the cold.

A long time for someone that old. He won't wait.

I've been here since 1998. I remember clearly the improvements Thaksin made for Thailand and understand the love some Thai's have for him. Perhaps the memories a bit dusty but...OTOP, One Tambon One Product, the villages products reinvigorated the klongthom markets nationwide. Revolving micro finance (10,000 baht?); the source of funding for the street sellers stalls that sprung up everywhere nationwide. Low cost housing, Suvarnabhumi Airport, amongst other infrastructure projects, Exchange rates at  about x2 today's rates (UK Pound/Thai baht =60/70+ baht) certainly benefitted me in the construction of a house in 2001. The introduction of universal healthcare......

He is no saint and never pretended to be, just a populist serving his own interest. However, he understood what Democracy means and that there are million of people, not just a few. And that alone made him better than all his peers.

that should work out great. He has been so quiet for decades.

Everyone, worldwide already knows.

Is that right?

Why no charges?

Why no convictions?

Why no Interpol involvement?

Why no protestors on this issue?

Why no commentary from the victims families?

Why no press?

It seems you are confused about what you know let alone what everyone worldwide knows.

Rubbish! He is Thai and had access to Thailand at anytime with or without a passport.

It is an encouraging sign to see that his return has been peaceful devoid of yellow shirts protesters. Even the leaders of PAD and PDRC have not made any comments. I think both colour shirts have moved on and the deep polarisation is fading. In a way, MFP has contributed to this healing of the colour division by speaking out about the old guard and rebuking of the military and political establishment. The Red Shirts are equally divided and leaderless and doubt they will regain their cohesion.

… The new fault line in Thailand is now between the conservative and reformist camps. The red versus yellow conflict is old news, and clearly Thaksin is now seen as the lesser of two evils.

Wrong.

Conservatives are no longer in the game.
