The days of military coups in Thailand are gone : Sutin

Sutin Klungsang might want to keep his uniform ironed; not only as MP but the next coup is eventually around the corner much faster than all those chair occupants in the government want to believe.

Seems like they have put a blithering idiot in charge of defence.

Just following tradition.

Tradition is everything...

For those that tradition serves.

But when the majority of the people reject traditions, or simply don't care, will they last?

Sutin Klungsang, deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party and tipped to be the new defence minister, said today that he believes that Thailand has long passed the days of military coups.

He expressed confidence that, with the help of advisors who are former military officers, he will be able to manage the affairs of one of country’s most important ministries effectively.

He stopped short, however, of confirming that he is slated for the job.  “Wait until there is a formal announcement,” he told reporters at Government House.

Sutin was, nonetheless, among nominees for a cabinet portfolio who submitted their resumes to the Cabinet Secretariat for formal verification.

When asked about Pheu Thai’s manifesto pledge to reform the military, Sutin said his party will try to implement every one of its election promises. “Every policy must be implemented, but how soon depends on the reality of the situation and various other factors,” he said.

Sutin, a former teacher and a veteran politician, was chosen by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for the defence post after an earlier nomination, Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit, a former secretary general of the National Security Council, was rejected, following opposition from members of the “red shirt” faction. Nattaphon is alleged to have been involved in the bloody crack-down of pro-Thaksin protesters in 2010.

Be at least a generation for time to clear out the dinosaurs before you could start to believe that. These military folk are too thick and stubborn to let go so easily.

Simply an insult to Thai people's intelligence. The 1997 "people's constitution" gave people freedom, until the military took it away.

You can reform the military to cut down the number of generals, cancel conscription - or whatever - but unless military bases are all moved to border areas and generals who rebel are imprisoned for life, not much will change.

So they will advise him how to run the country, so let me guess what will happen if he does not take their advise.

It's a country run by the military and *him*, and always will be.

Why former military officers... use the ones who are serving now if you want real up to date efficiency

but that wouldn't maintain the status quo, we've got to be seen to be doing something not necessarily achieving anything

...until they're not.

Funny, I seem to remember a certain General saying there would not be a coup, and what happened a little while later.

The "Eastern Tigers" might have something to say about it sometime in the future.  Coup, rinse, repeat.

Without the powers that backed them and major reshuffling of military appointments, they now are the “Eastern Pussies”.

"Every policy must be implemented, but how soon depends on the reality of the situation and various other factors,” he said.

Amongst the "various other factors" are, of course, Pheu Kray's selling its electorate up the Swanee, cohabiting with the military junta, stabbing MFP in the back in their desperate scramble for power and trough, and securing a deal for Thaksin. Great start guys and gals. Can it get any worse?

Absolutely, irrefutably 100% correct.

Thailand is on the cusp of irreversible generational change.

What strange bedfellows, Pheu Thai and the Junta make… necessitated, of course by, the fact that there will be no more successful military coups in Thailand.

That's what they said right before the last coup, too. I can't take any of this idle talk seriously anymore.

The sad reality is, the army will stage the next coup whenever they feel like it, and nobody will stop them.
