No outside food or drink….

This sign OBVIOUSLY does not apply to Chinese people in Thailand!

I’ve just been for my morning coffee at my regular morning hangout when a family of about 15 Chinese walked in.

I knew the storm was fast approaching.

they sat on the table directly in front of me. Kids were all over the place, climbing on tables, rolling around on the floor, you name it. Then mother goose opened up her backpack and pulled out a packed lunch for all the family, I’m talking full on banquet, orange duck, moo ping, durians, the lot! The stench was almost unbearable!

all the while I was looking at the sign at the side of their table that read ‘no outside food or drink allowed.’

are these people totally incapable of following simple rules such as this??? If I were the owner I would have booted the lot of them out, but nobody did. They each ordered a coffee and water for the kids but does that give them the right to have a 3 course meal in a bloody coffee shop at 8 o clock in the morning? The mess they left behind was appalling. I felt so sorry for the young student girl who had to clean up after them..

god help us all if they are going to be the new leaders of the world!

I think it's a learning curve, not long ago they were dirt poor, <deleted>ting on the streets (which they still do in foreign countries according to news reports) and in less than a generation, they have the means to vacation abroad, which of-course they do take advantage of.

It would really help if the Chinese government would help their county's reputation, by schooling people traveling abroad, if even for an hour or two, perhaps at the airport, but I guess they have more important things to deal with.

Unless the sign was in Chinese, well ... nuff said.

The stench was so unbearable, you stayed and watch them finish their 3 course meal.

And they are the problem, 15 drinks in less time while eating, than took you to finish your 1 coffee.  Got it.

I know what customers I would prefer as an owner.   Added plus for making the grumpy old bigot uncomfortable.

Just saying what I see. Another British gentleman who was there also objected to their behavior.

I am starting to notice, many Brits only seem to like Brits, with few exception, if AN is anything to go by.

Again, if the sign wasn't in Chinese ....

Popped in to local place for some KraPao, and parked in front.

Waitress, instead of thinking, 'ding dong farang, can't park there' informed me, odd days, you need to park on other side of street.

Thank You

Rules are made to be broken. Breaking them is great fun. As long as they bought something, all good. Leaving the mess was not cool. But, Chinese people tend to be very uncool. LOL.

It's a culture thing.  China overpopulates their restaurants with service workers.  Normal practice in fast food joints is to leave the debris on the tables for staff to remove.

Not all that different from the practice here.  Over half the local patrons at KFC and McD don't clear their tables either.

I ALWAYS clear my table after eating. KFC, McDonald’s, coffee shop or wherever. Unless at a restaurant that has waitress to remove your plate for you.

When I first got here I lived in a hotel near central for a month. The chef advised me it might not be a bad idea to live in Jomtien, she didn't really enjoy being around most of her customers(most were from India or China).

Video?

Maybe they had already cleared their planned take in breakfast with the owners the day before!

Did you ask?

The profit from their 15 beverages was probably greater than that from your breakfast!

Is there a law or policy which states that they have to behave and follow western mannerisms?

Should we all behave like uncultured pigs then, because, why not???

C'mon, they were only eating and drinking and had little bit of smelly durian.

Could you not have had a word with the restaurant staff to voice your objections or did you just suffer in silence?

You missed the point, AGAIN!

If it offends you, then get a sign written in simplified Chinese for the mainland ones, and complex Chinese for the Cantonese speaking ones.

Admitted it was 1988, in china  my g/f and I went in a restaurant to eat, the table was covered in bones and scraps of food left over from the last customer, they simply just wiped the lot straight on to the floor, and the first time i had seen people, eat, drink, and smoke all at the same time

Were you waiting for him to fall asleep so you could make his missus and offer she couldn't refuse ?  :whistling:  :giggle:

To be fair Bob... what you describe is rather low class behavior, especially with the the stench of food.

Any reason the coffeeshop staff didn't stop them ?

This is what I would expect. If the staff don't 'guide' those who can't behave and follow normal standards of behavior, then I wouldn't bother visiting that establishment again.

Vote with your feet.

Now... Did you see anything which did like today, something which hasn't turned your world dark ?

The waitress pointed out a local regulation, presumably so as to prevent either you or the establishment having an issue with the police... And this upset you?

And how does wanting to buy a pad krapaow turn into "ding, dong farrang"? Were you intending to pay significantly more for your krapow than a local?

There's a lot of people in Asia who hope that doesn't catch on.  Because if it does, they're out of a job and their families will go hungry.  It's their rice bowl.

This highlights the utterly preposterous logic some posters go to try and point score - hilarious...

... Are seriously trying to take the moral high ground with this virtuous idea that bob should leave a mess so that it provides a job for someone else ??

No.  I'm suggesting that maybe people who come from different parts of the world think differently, and holding them to his standards smacks of the bwana.  If you don't like Asian customs, why live in Asia?
