Some weeks back lost UK passport, big problem it's got my extension and re entry permit had to get a new one. Two days after the new one arrives the old one does as well, returned by national Express bus company, found on the number 230 from Heathrow. Now should I tell the passport office the old one has turned up, they must have cancelled it anyway or just cut the corner off, say nothing and present it at Thai immigration to get the extension transferred? The old one only had a year to run anyway. 

It's cancelled anyway, just present both on arrival at the airport. As for cutting the corner, probably sensible incase that's a requirement

My understanding is that passports are the property of issuing country.

Yes that sounds crazy.

You have no right to alter pp in any way.

Suggest the OP visit where the new pp was issued.

The way UK passports are renewed from Thailand. The UK passport office tells us to cut the corner off the passport ourselves once the new passport is received. As mentioned the passport office cancel lost/out of date passports.

Cutting the corner off is totally the right thing to do with a cancelled/invalid passport.

UK passports renewed in Thailand have to be done so via VFS. They submit applications and after time receive the new passport. In order to collect the new passport, the holder, or  someone acting on their behalf, has to submit the old passport, WHICH IS THEN CANCELLED AND  CORNER CUT BY VFS.  The UK passport Ofice tells you nothing!!!!!!!.

Only comment I'd make is the OP should make sure that the issuing office is aware the old passport has been found and that the issuing office has not reported the old passport as stolen.

 

About 20 years ago, I lost a passport in Bangkok and attended the US Embassy the next day to obtain a new one (which required, of course, the police report saying the passport was lost).  As it turned out, late that same day, a taxi driver showed up at my BKK hotel and delivered the old passport (he found it on the floor of the back seat of the cab).  I called the US Embassy the next day, explained the situation, they first told me they would not refund the $60.00 I paid for the new passport which they'd cancel, and I was good to go.  Several days later, when hitting the airport for a flight back to the US, the airline check-in person seemed a bit weird and suddenly two soldier-looking dudes showed up and escorted me into a back room.  The US Embassy reported the passport as stolen (which they apparently do for all lost or actually stolen passports) and that's why I was escorted to a back room for discussion (which was resolved in relatively short order).

 

I do realize the OP has a new passport which surely won't be reported as lost or stolen but it's possible the old one (the "lost" one) has been reported as stolen and may or may not raise a problem upon his entry into Thailand [as he's going to have to show both old and new passports to preserve his extension and re-entry permit (if multiple)].  So, if I was the OP, I'd make sure the issuing passport office has not reported the old passport as stolen.

Please explain how that is done when you lost your passport, applied for and received your new passport, But then find the lost passport 6+ months later? Guidance From the passport office is to cut the corner of the now invalid passport yourself!!!!!

Just to muddy the already murky waters: I've renewed 2 UK passports at Trendy Building in the past 10 years and on both occasions the Thai who inspected my documents cut the corner of my expiring passport when she was satisfied that all was in order.

In the UK it is a legal requirement that all invalid passports have the corner removed.

I was one of the first to get apassport through VFS in 2014 and was instructed to do it myself.

As far as the OP is concerned the passport office would have cancelled the previous passport before processing a new application.

When you apply for a UK passport in section 3 you have to declare all valid passports in your possession, if not in your possession you have to state if lost or stolen.

I was at the passport office i Liverpool Friday afternoon handing in my passport to get a new one. My old one will be returned minus the corner.

"Passports are issued using royal prerogative, which is exercised by His Majesty's Government;" they are not issued in the governments name.

 

Also, we have had a King since 8 Sept 2022

 

"His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.", written inside, clearly stating the request comes from the monarch, (albeit via government, but not in the government's name).

 

"The one person who will not need a passport is the King himself. By convention the monarch does not have to carry a passport to travel, because it is a document issued in his own name."

My new UK passport issued September 1st 2023 still refers to "Her Majesty". I think there is still old stock that is used when the new ones are in short supply.

Yes, they are as long as they are valid and active. After they have been cancelled, they are an antique that are for you to keep or give to your grand children to make origami with.

Yes, IMHO you should definitely let HMPO know ASAP that the old passport has turned up - and at the same time check with them whether it will be OK for you to cancel it by snipping off a corner on the front cover before wielding a pair of scissors for this purpose. Maybe best to do this by completing their passport enquiries form so that you have something in writing:-
