I think I've gone native for too long.

Haven't worn a regular pair of shoes for more than 10 years, just flip flops, so bought a pair of sneakers to try but felt like my feet were encased in hot cement and just couldn't tolerate them for more than a few minutes. Just don't think I can go back to regular footwear unless they are ultra light and breathe.

  • I would hope you have not stopped using condoms for the same reason. I'm just trying to remember the last time I wore a tie.

no dress shoes is understandable. but no sneakers = you never exercise best of luck with the overweight issues, diabetes and all the rest of it while you're bar hopping in flip flops.

  • I caught myself blurting out "ooi" instead of "ow f_k" when I stubbed my toe on a table leg the other day.   Please kill me.

Same here. Had to go to a UK wedding last year and wear 'proper' shoes. Killed me.

It's called 'Flintstone feet'. And yes, you have them, and so do I.

Your the kind of guy Farang tourists like to have on a River Cruise. Because if there is ever a 'motor' failure, you will be asked to just dangle your feet overboard and paddle everybody safely to shore.

There's always an upside, Giddy...!

As far as shoes go.  Yeah, I agree.  I put a pair of trainers on for about 5 minutes.  Nope.  Probably ain't wearing shoe again in this life-time.

Haven't worn a tie since the day I retired from the Australian Public Service in 2004.

Barefoot most of the day here in Surin in and around the house, sandals for visits to shops, sneakers for special occasions (rain or Immigration or visit to BKK).

I gotta pair of those but I don't wear them.  The edges and strap rubs blisters into my feet.  I just go for plain, old Gambol flip-flops.  I probably go though a couple of pair a year.  But each to their own.  I could see how some people might like those.

As long as one does not end up as the shirtless farang in a car and get busted by the cops.

You make a good point as there are more and more reckless mongrels getting their weekly or monthly maintenance,  with no protection at all, putting themselves and others at high risk of spreading,  sometimes,  deadly STD's.

They need to be worn in IME, flip flops I can't stand that bit in between my toes.

Gambols and black rubber boots (for the garden or walking the dog). Shoes are for when traveling out of country, and feel weirder each time.

At 81, 6'2" and 86 kilos, a non smoker and very moderate drinker,  who cares?

Got to attend daughter wedding next month, OMG, suite, tie and shoes, can I take a rain check.

I wear Bata flip flops outside, haven't worn shoes except at funerals and one wedding in the last few years. I can't remember the last time I wore a tie, or sneakers for that matter.

I go barefoot around the house, and I don't even wear a shirt unless I go offsite.

At 79 I am still in the pre diabetes stage.

As for overweight I weighed 107.9 kg this morning down from my peak in January of 118,1 kg.

As for exercise I do between 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day.

Not too bad for an old man.

How about you?

A ‘gone native’ thread discusses chilling & not having to wear shoes & a tie….

… I thought I’d be reading about driving like a nutter or the ultimate going native…..  ‘eating insects’ !!

(yes… I’ve seen westerners in a Thai office eating insects & offering them around with a sense of ‘look at how I’ve adopted Thai culture’ pride, much to the horror of the office cuties hiding behind their hello kitty adorned computer monitors while wearing ‘animal feet shaped croc type things’ & a grannies cardigans ‘cos the AC is ‘nao-maaaak’ !!!! )…

I'm just the opposite. Wore sandals for years, then changed to real shoes. I even wear high tops now in Thailand.

I'm much more comfortable with a protective shoe. Can jump curbs, go over anything and no woorries about dogs, rats etc or getting dirty feet walking around town.

Same here… I guess it depends where you are, what you are doing & how you get around.

Ride a motorcycle in flip-flops ? No way…

Walk around BKK (or any city) in flip-flops?… no.

Yes, riding a motorcycle in flip-flops is silly. But for those scooters everybody drives here, flip-flops are fine.

I've been in SE Asia for over 20 years. I think the last time I wore a condom was in high school.

i think a lot of guys are just kind of loafing around. maybe sitting in bars or doing the street corner thing near their condo or sitting at bars or the beach. not really walking long distances or traveling.

i like really getting out there and walking around town. going places where i could not hobble home on one flip flop if i had too.

My feet get too sweaty in flip flop type footwear, so much so that trying to walk anything over average speed and I'm in danger of breaking an ankle. I do wear them around the exterior of the house, bare feet inside, and pretty much always trainers when anywhere further afield.

You've really gone native when you drive over a pedestrian crossing - with pedestrians on it - without a care in the world.

My mate makes Dr martens here, I got a free pair, lifetime warranty. Worn them a lot at work.

Guilty. No one cares in Khon Kaen but in Hua Hin get shouted at by farang who can't integrate.
