Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe – in Bangkok

Around Thailand today, Phuket is one of the only provinces with clear air quality. The South, as well as Bangkok and parts of the north-east, are suffering from poor air quality, rating ‘unhealthy’ in many zones, according to iqair.com. Phuket’s air quality monitoring stations are all ‘good’ today except for the one in the Viset area…

Meanwhile, Bangkok has been shrouded in poor air quality and causing concern for residents as officials try and explain the unseasonal air pollution.

Yesterday morning, the concentration of PM2.5 particles in the atmosphere surpassed safety standards in 22 regions of the Capital.

It's certainly not a problem where we live. I'm just back from a lovely walk in clean fresh air, as it is almost every day of the year around here.

The 2 days of 'moderate' on the chart below are, what I regard as unusually high!

Sakon Nakhon gets its share of bad air pollution days through the year....  This chart below is just a partial recap of earlier in 2023 (not sure why some periods are missing data), but it clearly shows a lot of bad/red pollution days earlier in the spring.

The red zone corresponds to the sugarcane harvesting season of course. That and the fact that the readings are taken within the city would account for the high readings. We live some 20kms to the east of the city in a region where no sugarcane is grown and we're well away from a main road.

We have no complains about the air quality here. If I can see the peaks of the Pho Pha Yon hills some 15kms away to our south, I'm happy with the air. And I nearly always can.

It's not like air pollution is constrained by urban vs rural or locations close to vs. far from roads. The pollution, once in the air, drifts wherever the prevailing winds take it, which can include distances of hundreds of kilometers.

You can not see PM2.5. The area around north east is very bad from time to time. I have checked it out several years and decided not to move there. Not having sugarcane arond is of little interest as the pollution comes from far away like Laos, Myanmar north west of Thailand, China etc. The best parts of Thailand is the south for example Phuket, Trang, Songkhla.

I can look around my village and see many septuagenarians, quite a few octogenarians and even a couple of nonagenarians. I myself am a fit and healthy 77 year old. I long since gave up being concerned about the air that I'm breathing.

And BTW, I spent my earlier years in west London, before the Clean Air Act of 1956. I can recall having to hold my hand out in front of me to reduce the risk of bumping into a lamp post or whatever.

Most folks around here don't have a clue what bad air is all about.

Yes London had bad air long time ago. Not PM2.5 but pollutions from cars. I remember when being there 30 years ago my eyes start to hurt after only a short time there. That did not happen in BKK at that time. I don't know about these days as I haven't been in London for a very long time.

Yes, most people don't know so much about this subject. Especially middle and lower class Thais. That is unfortunate. More information is important.

"Worst" value (55) on Phuket is at the Municipal Health Center

Value at our district town (nearest station) is 38.

A few km away near the sugar mill it's 65.

For consolation, there are worse places on earth:

(Delhi, India)

And you can always put a station curbside to a major highway at 0.5 m above ground and produce huge values.

I think we are going to hear that a committee will be formed and several sub-committees empowered (to do nothing)
