Can you give us a synopsis of Dr Strange? Some of us don't watch comic book movies. Movies that you derive a quote marks lesson from.

You have so much to teach. I'm all ears.

Totally agree! It has been highjacked by a hard core of approx. 12 idiots/Bots/paid for posters who may be increasing the "click count" but are ruining the site!

  • The fun has been lost.   We used to have fun posts about sightings of Michelin men and Mountain Dew and the like.   Now almost every post degrades into pages of off topic bickering

No, that's rightfully only for Gamma.

As to the many Mensa members here, I pulled at a Mensa meeting -as a non-Mensa. Can any Mensa here claim the same?

I've gone from visiting daily to checking in a couple of times per month, strictly due to the small number of members who post daily rubbish topics with zero value. There should be a limit to the amount of topics you can create, because a few members are using the site as their personal blog or diary, burrying topics with actual substance and use.

I always enjoyed posting here, but now I can barely write anything without it being deleted by admin, and I receiving a warning. I assume it's the same for most other users. Since it changed from thaivisa it has deteriorated a lot.

That there are 3 other people as ill-informed as you?

I don't think this applies to this site only. I have taken an English language newspaper, that I will not name for over thirty five years. In both its forms, paper and online.  The letters section used to be interesting, clever and often amusing. Now its been taken over by a handful of letter writers. Grinding out their own crusades back and forth. Devoid of any wit or humour. Political correctness? Or now in an age where sarcasm and calling a spade a spade and not an agricultural implement, has taken over?

I gave you the 'lesson' and you didnt listen - try using those ears.

Here it is again - it is not all about you 'boy'.

You are equating attendance (at Unis) with performance of those that attended and 'passed'.   Back in the days I am talking about (pre-80 in modern time), it was all about performance. Now woke progressives give degrees/awards merely for attendance.

Check out the current Thai system - where success is often 'paid for'.

When people disagree with you and think what you said is 'confusing' it does not automatically mean that they are wrong.

I know this could be very hard, but perhaps what you wrote is just gibberish rubbish.

Maybe try again?

Yep, posted a comment on  "new" posting early today, simply saying that the posting had already been posted and commented on extensively yesterday and has now  been removed, further, the post with my comment disappeared pretty quickly. So it would seem the original post wasn't heading in the desired direction so was removed along with my comment.

Seems participants are no longer valued if they don't toe the line deemed appropriate by AN.

I agree it seems to be going downhill.

What a fantastic forum for all of us .

I loved that it changed from a Thai centric forum to a "Asia" forum for everyone wherever they be in Thailand or Philippines.

We all should be proud and thank the moderators and management for their dedication and hard work in keeping us informed and entertained

Without this forum many would be lonely and sitting in studio rooms alone or back in farangland, many and believe me only have this "family " on here to get their Thailand fix

Day after day ,night after night , moderators are working hard

Thankyou

Join me in saying thankyou 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Remember the good old days when forums and associated social media were open and free?

And maybe what you wrote is just anecdotal nonsense not backed up by any hard data. However, and as previously mentioned, you are more than welcome to prove me wrong with verifiable stats/figures to 'prove' your ascertion.

I won't hold my breath though.

Only a woke liberal progressive OEI would say "prove me wrong with verifiable stats/figures."

That 'education' you received was clearly a waste of time and money.

Agee and Disagree. It IS going wrong right now.  Why do you think all the stupidity exists in the world now, much more than 40+ years ago.

Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Aristarchus and many others in ancient Greece advanced human civilisation more than any other civilisation before and since. The reason is simple - Plato decided that the future 'leaders' should receive an 'education' with the core subjects being Maths, Geometry, Music and Astronomy (after learning how to read and write) in an Academy. This was carried on and became the creator of so much advancement in alll areas of 'science' as we now call it.  Only the 'elite' werre educated and they ruthlessley weeded out those that failed - no idiots or women were allowed. This lasted for hundreds of years and was the bedrock upon which their civilisation grew mankind's knowledge and understanding. Unfortunately they could not fight and they were 'conquered and dispersed'. Next came the Arabs who followed this structured enviroment, until their new religion cruched them. Then it was Europe with Italy, England, Spain and France oppening Universities.

Fast forward to the modern days we are now living in. The core problem right now is that we are educationg our idiots. Since 1980s the eductaion system has been 'modified' to better suit one demographic and the idiots, so much so that they are deominating those that graduate. Instead of teaching only Maths, Science, English and History - our education system is now teaching genders, enviroment, feelings and diversity. Those 'educated idiots' have been taking over the positions of authority since 1980s - and they have been making things worse not better than they were in the past.

Why did the ancient Greeks throw idiots out of their instituions?  Because if allowed to stay the idiots would corrupt the education of the intelligent ones by forcing the teachers to 'teach' to the lowest common denominator (being the idiots).   There is a fundamental fact about idiots - especially educated idiots - they dont know that they are idiots.  Intelligent people are full of doubt and are always questioning how things work and how can they be made better - idiots dont do that - they just try to change things to make them more they way they want them to be,

There is a lot to agree with in that post.

👍

Anecdotal nonsense.

'More young people are taking science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) subjects at university than ever before, according to statistics published last week by UCAS. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of women accepted into full-time STEM undergraduate courses increased by 49%. In the same 10-year span, the number of UK 18-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds accepted into full time undergraduate STEM courses increased by 79% - from 7,265 in 2010 to 13,040 in 2020. These new results suggest that young people are benefiting from increased support in these subjects, with potential barriers to access based on gender, race or class gradually being lifted.

https://educationhub.blog.gov.uk/2021/02/09/more-young-people-are-taking-stem-subjects-than-ever-before/

There is no 'modification' of the education system other than a more diverse curriculum that appeals to a greater majority however, this has NOT undermined the 'classics', with greater enrolment for these than at any time in history.

Perhaps you can then explain why so many students leave school barely literate and store clerks can't subtract 3 from 10 in their heads?

Employers are becoming desperate for people with a work ethic and have a modicum of intelligence.

As for myself I had considered the current forum as devoid of any humour, unlike in the good old days, but recently the World News subforum has become a regular comedy center, as associated posters ( are they AI bots? ) come out en mass to post inane one line baiting comments against anyone that does not toe the "official" narrative, whatever that may be ( it changes depending on country ).

Worth it just for the laughs.

Sarcasm alert for the easily offended.

Easily offended - that seems the majority today, unfortunately and it would appear many need to grow a pair and join the real world

Not just here. Remember when radio played the "top 10" records? There were singers like Ray Stevens with humerous songs like "Gidget the Midget".

Fun times all gone.

Once you have succeeded in banning large numbers of them it is tantamount to killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

That's the nub of it in my view.  Moderation got out of control and I know that many members resented being treated like children and so moved on to other forums that are more relaxed, but no less respectful of diversity in views.  Another factor is the expansion and usefulness of other social media platforms and the flexibilities they provide and encourage.  Forums are looking increasingly like a past generation outlet for comment, knowledge and interest. Add poor and excessive  moderation in past years to that mix, against social media's lack of meaningful  moderation and you have a blueprint for the demise of forums.  Finally, the rebranding from 'Thai Visa' was and is a disaster. Thai Visa said what it was, 'Asean Now' is a meaningless search title for those searching for a forum home.

Because the teachers are useless.  Look no further than the expat teacher brigade that live here and try to teach Thai's.  The ones I meet and hear about here are mainly unqualified, ( a degree in Under Water Basket Weaving does not an English  teacher make ), untrained in the 'art'  and barely literate themselves.

Yes, but moaning about western women would be encouraged and not deleted.

That is one thing that hasn't changed in my lifetime.

Almost all my teachers were incompetent oafs ( what's the female equivalent of oaf? ) that taught me nothing worth while, absolutely zero about real life, did nothing to make learning fun, and treated us like <deleted>. I don't think they even liked teaching, and that was at the supposed good schools ( they certainly charged my father a bundle of cash to send me there ).

One <deleted> used to hit me about the head, and another beat us for getting sums wrong. One headmaster disliked women so much he allowed us as little contact with girls as he could get away, with the result that females were a strange breed to me when I got a job where women were also employed. Didn't even have a girlfriend till my 20s.

Sex education- none. Relationship education- none. Career advice- none.

I don't think it's got any better, given by what I see slouching about on the streets.

At least we could stand up straight, speak so others understood us, read a book, write a letter and do mental arithmetic. We also did lots of exercise and were not obese by 13.
