Managing forum toxicity and negativity

Is there a way to change the "Rate this Topic" option from 1-5 stars to something like;

- Excellent Topic

- Good Topic

- Average Topic

- Below average Topic

- Mindless Drivel Topic

Then if/when a topic gets X amount of mindless drivel votes, it's removed and if the OP keeps posting drivel, a yellow card is given? 555, Just a thought.

I disagree, politeness and civility cost nothing. If posters can't express themselves without resorting to vulgarity they shouldn't be published in public forums.

There is a positive side to this forum, it’s nice to see who is giving a thumbs up. If you want to give a negative reaction, then own it, there is no shame. Maybe the admin see this as antagonistic - it wasn’t for the lifespan of TV and the initial period of AN. Why the change?

@Goat We shouldn't call our fellow members for "idiots" in here.

And yes, you can put people on ignore if you don't want to read their content or interact with them. :violin:

Not only drivel but a platform to troll other members, one of the downsides of moderations new orders..........

I think the new style of moderating has been well recieved.

Your style of moderation over on the other forum resulted in halving readership in less than a single month.

It doesnt work.

Less moderation the better. People need to harden up.

Only illegal comments regarding the Royal family need to be moderated. And perhaps some racist comments.

That's exactly what the star ratings are used for. Use them more!

Fair enough George.

I dont even know where the ignore button is??

Cant say anything anyone says actually "gets" to me. The constant Thai bashing perhaps.

Anyway I would like to thank you for improving things here.

Too many plastic posters mate. Being paid to post might make the forums seem busy.

But they are frauds. They are imposters.

Do 'you'  think we can't recognise their continual drivel?  Do 'you' think we are all fools?

Thanks for the Visa section, nearly the only thing worth visiting........... IMHO of course.

You sound like you are paranoid.

I doubt they would pay for posters when the mods dont even get paid.

But if they do pay posters I think i should be getting paid for my contributions and insight.

I think there is the problem. Thaivisa was going along nicely.

Then "ideas man" Dan came in with all theories and krap and re branded it "Aseannow" which has been a utter and complete flop.

The Singapore forum just one example of many. Despite having more expats in Singapore than in Thailand it is lucky to get a single post every 6 months.

It is about as popular as his Dans Dating site which douesnt have any girls.

All is it is is talk. A "gonna".

Good at talking but he actually delivers literally nothing.

He has ran it into the ground. Meanwhile ironically he is out there tiktokking daily about "how to be successful in Thailand"

How does Dan run a small business? Give him a big business.

Since George has come back on board there has been a significant improvement in my opinion. At least he has stopped the slide.

Things looks good. The forum has a constant growth since 6 months back. We are recovering big time after the very unsuccessful re-branding. Improved SEO and changed moderation attitude is part of the strategy. I'm good at this kinda stuff.. (jokingly).

Regarding Dan: He is doing well with his YouTube Channel and property business, and I'm running the AseanNow show since 1.5 years. Forum was not his bag.

We are soon launching a campaign to get more new members onboard. Follow this space!

They started getting popular when this forum started sinking, a lot of the big names went over there.

Then they gave the mods job to completley the wrong person, it went to his head, he banned anyone who didnt agree with him and he basically killed it.

Must have been a good joke:cheesy:

I believe Proton got banned for posting music in the music section. You got banned for a joke in the joke section.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to send emails to the popular banned members such as Colin, Yinn, Villagefarang, Orton Road, NCCA1901 etc and invite them back.

They were only banned because of the moderation policy that you now admit was not quite right.

As much and a little as 'they' (plural usage) annoying vs entertaining, just like the TV/radio, ignore/change the channel.

I'll post occasionally starting of with 'to the title' ... which usually means just that, as poster is probably on my ignore list. Or I peeked, rolled my eyes to the OP, but title might warrant a reply.

What is annoying, is the repetitive ignorance/trolling of good info threads; solar & EV threads being prime example.   Repetitive stupid comments = trolling, going way being ignorance, and they really should be told to stop it or put on vacation.

Though most are ignored of late, and they seem to get bored if nobody replies to them.  So slowly self correcting.

The forum is a quick read now, with ignore list, and knowing the OP posting, and I seem to be able to go through 8 hrs of posting in 5 minutes, by simply opening the ones that interest me in another tab, and come back to them to reply after ignoring the other 8 hrs of postings 🤣

The problem Khun LA is that on some topics, such as EVs, your truth is another man's lies and vice versa.  Each side takes an entrenched position and is unwilling to recognise that there is some truth in each position.

Basically forum members here are reluctant to enter a reasonable discussion and are reluctant to understand or recognise that there are valid view points other than their own.

This is by no means confined to the subject of EVs.

Currently, a handful of members create new topics in the Pub that are constant drivel, all about nothing.

Clearly took less than 30 seconds to write.

Then follows hostile banter, personal attacks, page after page.

This has been going on for some time already, and many members has commented on this.

These handful members who do nothing else than post drivel, should be on Full Moderation (moderator approved, before thread / post become visible).

Forums want traffic, preferable quality content that engage members and readers.

Not nonsense drivel that mostly result in flaming trolling, multiple personal attacks. Plenty of this now, and increasing.

Moderation is very complicated. Some other forum previously banned left and right for years, and lost many valuable quality members.

Those forum become famous for banning. As a result, less new members, less traffic.

I believe that moderators should use Personal Message more often to warn individual members.

Then increasing posting holiday for members who already received and ignored formal warnings given in PM.

Some moderators are too strict, they've been moderator for too long.

Example, I wrote a post where I made a joke about myself with a image (old man with a walking cane) I am old and after surgery, I needed a walking cane. This was lost on moderator, and post removed by a certain mod that members consider 'extremely strict'.

Moderators should have a lifespan, as they become judgmental and over time some act too strict.

Other forums required a minimum of 2 mods to agree, before action was taken. Only Admins had the power to ban.

Luckily, some mods are excellent, balanced moderation, have a good sense of humor and make jokes with the members.

The Handbook is Excellent read, and toxicity is on a all time high, currently.

Community Pub should be hidden from public view, and access only on request from members.

I completely agree there are several people who keep boasting nearly every day, and their posts are absolute drivel, no content, no thought put into them, I want to be seen and heard so guys please reply, those kind of posts.

I just ignore those members at this point and enjoy the rest of the good content that's on here, and there is plenty of good content, and there are plenty of members who are thoughtful, intelligent, articulate, and really have something to say. That's what I focus on, the rest of the stuff like any other form of social media I just ignore. Water off a duck's back.

On the subject of blocking people in sixteen years on this forum I have only ever blocked three people.

I agree 100% - becoming a Moderator should not be a lifetime position.

They aint serving on the Supreme Court - but some of them behave that way.

2 years at a time - minimum of 2 year break - then again if they want to nominate.

Good Moderators are hard to find - Bad Moderators are hard to get rid of - so get rid of them all.

Membership (minimum 1 year member) votes every 2 years for the new Mods.

BUT there should also be a new category of senior members - Experts.

Eg.  Sheryl on the medical issues - not as a Mod but as an Expert Adviser to members.

IMO Experts should not have to deal with the mundane issues related to policing member's posts.

IMO the only thing that should be 'moderated' are things that would legally be unacceptable.

If it aint illegal to say something then it should not be 'moderated' - if you are upset when insulted, then either block them or go away.

Too much watsed time for Mods in dealing with member's complaints - which are often just malicious anyway.

Having said all that - if it is a legal obligation to moderate all posts due to laws in Thailand - then pay them.

But I would still like the Forum to have 'Experts' - and pay them too (if not already).

If Mods are not paid then that is an issue - in my experience some people who 'volunteer' to be 'boss' (unpaid) are on a power trip.

That may not work, you may have to let word of mouth do the job. Previously banned members often use a new email address just to gain membership and then forget the password, er, at least that's what somebody told me, down the pub, you know how people talk.

If "you" change moderation policy I think it would be good to publish information about that so that we are aware of the changes.

I was suspended a couple of times for little things which I would never have imagined could be a problem.

Now I don't post certain things anymore because I don't want to be suspended again - and only for that reason.

It's sad when members have to learn to self-censor even harmless jokes to avoid aggressive moderators.

What is worrying about a certain clique of posters they will surround another poster like a pack of hyenas and keep snarling at him until they've had their pound of flesh.
