This is Phuket,

There was a report earlier this year of a girl from UK there in hospital for 3 days for food poisoning. Luckily she did have insurance as the bill was almost 300k baht!

As far as Govt hospitals I’ve gone monthly (check ups) for 2+ years and had one operation. All around the service and facility are nothing to complain about. The operating/recovery area is very modern. … No complaints at all at Udon Thani.

Just walk out the hospital when you feel better and fly home to get proper treatment. Tell em to stick the 400K!

legally he doesn’t have to pay a penny.

despite what anyone says, it is a hospitals duty to accept any and all emergency cases without question. Im not saying to walk out without paying is morally right, thats another story, but legally he doesn’t have to pay a cent.

a link to the legislation that states that would be handy :-)

also he has "suspected leukemia", so maybe not an emergency at all

More likely too many beers and bongs and simply over revved the body.

Government hospitals lack many things compared to private versions but the picture he's painting is utter bs.

I've been in Red Cross hospitals here and the medical staff were great.

Complete tosser

Red Cross isnt a government compare to a real per say government.

Where was it reported that he "had blood leaking from his body"?

Who's body did the blood come from ?

I don't know, doubt that he does either, all the article reports his mate saying about that is "There has been blood on the cover since he got there".  Sort of suggests a stained bed cover, not that he has uncontrolled "leaking" blood.

And, just as legally, there is nothing the patient can do in that situation to stop the hospital calling the police for doing, or trying to do, a runner on a bill.

And if you dont have the money in your bank to pay after you have received treatment? Off to the gulag is it? I dont think so, Lou.

I agree, no trip to the gulag but, just because a patient doesn't have any money doesn't mean that he can expect to avoid any demands to pay his bill and that can involve the police.

A few years ago I had quarterly Dr appointments at BPH heart center.

When done with the Dr a nurse would accompany me to the cashiers window on the next floor and didn't leave until my payment was completed.

It got to the point where I almost said something like "whats up don't you trust me?" and then I realized that they don't!

It pissed me off because my insurance company at the time paid out well over 1 mil previously for bypass surgery.

After checking the thick invoice I noticed the bill was well and truly padded.pricks

Yep, paying yourself and insurance paying isn't the same. Not even close. Hence why insurance rates are spiraling. Its all a very well orchestrated rip.

As for the heart center, I have to pay at the IPD payment room next door... I'm sure they have one eye on me to ensure I pay.

I have stayed in Government Hospitals in Thailand, I find very hard to believe the conditions he is describing

Over the years I have heard very positive things about some of them.....but also the other side of the coin.

This is from the Mirror newspaper. The worst tabloid in the UK. I doubt its what he said or how he said it. The war-torn and the hose comment were probably said jokingly with British wit? And the newspaper turned it into a sensation piece. Its what they do.

Yes, and they pay for these sensationalised (by them) stories. maybe The Mirror could send him a few old copies of their rag that he could tear up to wipe his arse with?

I'm not a Doctor, but I play one on AN.

I suspect he had leukemia before he left his home country.

So, he felt a lot of fatigue (tiredness that lasts a long time and doesn't improve with rest) and had bruising and bleeding more easily, or bleeding that takes longer to stop and lots of infections that are more frequent, severe, or last longer. And maybe a fever (high temperature) or weight loss that is unexplained.

...and then he decided to go on vacation in Thailand.

Well, alrighty then. 😄

That's what I was referring to earlier, although not at that particular facility. When I paid there were two nurses that immediately took the paid receipt and escorted me downstairs through a public lobby and the elevators to the pharmacy which was even more odd. I can't see them losing the personnel time just as a courtsey. That means they were doing it for everybody, although I did not notice while waiting for the appointment.

But what really got me thinking was the giggles of the nurses in english about getting the receipt while going down. They gave away that it was watching me and an escort out.

I think there's a lot of people that end up in Thailand for care and can't pay, especially in the tourist areas. They go in for care then just make an excuse or cause a scene before paying.

I also had a procedure requiring multiple visits. After each visit I had to pay just for the procedures done that day, rather then paying upon completion at the end. People probably bail out mid treatment if they don't do it that way, maybe finishing the course of treatment somewhere else or what have you.

Again, if there is no money in his bank account, and he keeps shtum about any potential relatives that can help out financially, then where is the money going to come from? It’s a case of no money no honey. No honey for the hospitals, that is…
