Quite the opposite  Going after the end user, customer, is the easy, correct way to go.  End the demand, and theoretically, you'll end the supply.  Sadly, simply too many pervs out there, that want to have sex with children.

 

Don't knw about Germany, but it is illegal to travel internationally to have sex with minors.  If known, one would face arrest on return to USA.  I've even send news-blips of Yanks arrest to FBI for their consideration.

Surely he should be charged with breaking Thai law. But again Germany, unlike many EU countries, the USA and Australia, appears to not care what laws a German breaks as long as it isn't in Germany. That's interesting, and maybe why the accused admitted his actions, knowing he would not be prosecuted back home

At the same time, some European and Scandinavian countries, unlike Germany, criminalise all sex tourism activities by their citizens abroad.

Yes, you are missing something out. Not all people living in Germany having a German Passport, all non German Citizen can be extradited to another Country in case there is a Treaty and it was approved by a Court.

Wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that the establishment she works for/out of has vetted her for things like age and legality? And hopefully, communicable diseases...

 

Edit: Especially since it's so easy to get fake ID at places like Kao San Road. I wouldn't trust any ID she could present if my freedom were at risk.

Indeed, although some seem to think the law is a joke here it is from section 9 of the 1996 act. Even if it's made legal it will not include minors of 17

 

If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against a person over fifteen years but not over eighteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of five to fifteen years and a fine of one hundred thousand to three hundred thousand baht.

If the offence under the first paragraph is committed against a child not over fifteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of ten to twenty years and a fine of two hundred thousand to four hundred thousand baht.

I get that , and maybe a Thai would spot a fake ID easily  but a foreigner might not be able to, especially after a few changs.   in the same way I could probably spot a fake £20 more easily than a Thai  would,

15 is the age of consent in Thailand but:

If Thai police would do their job, then there wouldn't be any prostitution in Thailand, because it is illegal in Thailand.

If Thai police would only do part of their job, then they would at least prevent that girls under 18 or 20 work in bars. Obviously, they don't do even that.

Furthermore, it is well known that police take money from many entertainment places so that they don't do their job. When will all those corrupt police officers be investigated and punished?

 

And about that 17-year-old girl: Why does she work in a bar? Likely because her family didn't take care of her. Otherwise, she would likely be in school.

And then, let's compare the life of a 17-year-old girl working in a bar compared to a 17-year-old girl with an older foreign boyfriend. With how many guys will she have sex in the bar? How many of them will not be nice? How many will have STD? Will she be drunk every day?

So is the alternative, that she takes care of one guy, who takes care of here, such a bad alternative?

 

Lots of situations in Thailand are f#$# up! Parents don't take care of their children, parents demand money from their daughters knowing well that the daughters prostitute themselves for the new TV and pickup. 

As far as I know there is no decent welfare system in Thailand. Girls, some under 18, do what they have to do to survive. And they do what they want to do when they choose between a factory job or a bar job where they make in 3 days what they make in the factory in a month.

 

I suggest Thailand should sort out first all their corrupt politicians and police. After that problem is solved then they can start to worry about minor problems like this one.

The act was done in Thailand and is a minor (under 18years) so yes illegal, and can be taken to court in most countries.
