Thaksin is sick and not granted special privileges : Justice minister

Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is genuinely sick and has not been granted any privileges while or by being treated on the 14th floor of Police General Hospital, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong told members of parliament today.

He also maintains that the regulation, recently issued by the Corrections Department, to allow convicts to serve their terms outside prisons is intended to ease overcrowding in prisons and was not meant to benefit Thaksin, as claimed by critics, adding that the law pertaining to serving prison terms outside prisons has been in enforceable since 2017.

Tawee responded today to a question raised by Move Forward MP for Pathum Thani province, Chonthicha Jaengrew, about fair enforcement of the law, citing the case of Thaksin who has been in the Police General Hospital the over 120 days since his return to Thailand from self-imposed exile.

He explained that Thaksin’s stay at the hospital was approved by the director-general of the Corrections Department and on the recommendation of the doctors treating him.

Although being treated at the hospital, the minister said that the former prime minister is not allowed to leave the hospital and no visitors are allowed, adding that the 14th floor is not exclusive to the former prime minister, as there are other patients on the floor.

As a matter of fact, he said the 14th floor is used for security reasons.

Some posters here really get a hard on by calling Thailand a third world country, it is pretty sad.

It clearly isn't a third world country. It has a lot of corruption, yes, but it is not a third world country by any stretch.

And if you want corruption take a good look at the Tory party in the UK, outrageous corruption - it is not limited to Asia.

You can watch the Democratic Party in the US on the news every day of the year. They wrote the book on it. It's absurd for people on here to accuse Thailand of being corrupt when their own countries are much worse. It's just hidden a bit deeper. It seems many forum members are looking for any excuse to condemn Thailand. 3rd World? - not even close.

The very fact this clown had to released a statement tells you that no one in Thailand believes he was ever sick to begin with.  The corruption is so entrenched in this farce of a justice system that they expect the population to accept anything they say because it's always been the quota.

As you know, there are many, many posters on this site that know very little about Thailand despite what they think,

WITH de facto Pheu Thai boss/convict at large Thaksin Shinawatra’s stay at Police Hospital having reached 120 days today (Dec. 21) rumours have spread that the Corrections Department has approved his continued stay there with there being no official announcement on this issue, Matichon newspaper said this evening.

According to procedures, Mr. Nassathee Thongplad, commander of the Bangkok Remand Prison, has to submit papers with the opinion of doctors treating him for Corrections Department Director-General Sahakarn Petnarin to consider approving extension of his stay there beyond this point as it is deemed that he is still ill.

However the Corrections Department chief has not scheduled a press conference nor clarified this issue.

But this forum and particularly the OP has nothing to do with the UK! Get over it!

Amazing the day before he came back he was at a big party, the dictator in Cambodia and then he comes back here the next day and he’s so ill that he’s been in the hospital for four months plus I know many people that have an operation in a hospital and usually within the week they’re released. This is all just a big joke, TIT

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of the probe.

It's amazing what a few strategically placed envelopes can do for ' expert opinions '  to be given favourably.

Every person that walks upright on two legs knows this is corruption and cronyism of the highest order.

No envelopes necessary in this case, have you not noticed how they snivel to the rich?

leave him alone...he returned voluntarily to Thailand and is serving out the remainder of his sentence under the control of The Department of Corrections..end of story.

So are there many other prisoners serving their time in hospitals...and specifically, the same hospital suite as Thaksin. Suspect the correct answers would be a small number and none.

So if Thailand is lucky, he might cash it in shortly.
