Expat vs Economic migrant

It seems to me that a lot of posters here are not expats, but rather economic migrants.

 

When I read some posts here I am astonished with amazement to read.....

 

"I use an agent because I can't meet financial requirements."

 

"I rely on gofundme and luck from above for medical treatments"

 

"I would rather live poor in Thailand than poor in Europe"

 

"I teach English in Thailand"

 

Thailand is no place for the poors

Interestingly, expats having more than a certain level of income and capital are frequently told that Thailand is no place for them either, which begets the question, who should be living here?

I think the answer should be pretty obvious. After all, a lot of people here complain about Thais not being taught basic financial responsibilities. 

 

It seems like economic migrants lack the same.

Thais desire the cosmopolitan; they tend to get the retiree who has never lived abroad before, who brings their parochial prejudices on the plane with them, who seeks to learn nothing from their new country, and who isolates into farang ghettos. 

 

But if they can't have the cosmopolitan, then they'll make do with retirees who have enough to not be a drain on the system, and workers with at least something more than a degree from the Polytechnic of Pub life.

There seem to be many economic refugees here, but that does not mean that they are not also expats...

Have retirement  / oops fund for more that a few decades in TH, more like the wife does, as decade (1) would be a stretch for me.

 

If going back to the mother land (never), then most of the oops fund would be used up for housing probably, as quite expensive now  Since in USA, wouldn't really need an oops fund.  So there's that.

 

But better to be here w/oops fund, and lack of RE Taxes & healthcare premiums (plan B), as puts a lot more extra jingle in the pocket every month here.  Somehow on a pittance of income, we still save quite a bit of money every year.

Those who sold everything at home are now forced to call Thailand home. Very few retirees have the finances to start over in home country. They are the ones bashing their home country.

Many retirees can return to their home countries without any money, and they will be taken care of.

Hopefully we all won't need that option. But it's nice to know it exists.

 

I know a couple of people who had to go "home" broke and now they don't have sun and the sea but at least a warm room and 3 meals a day.

personally i think whether somebody should or should not be living here is a matter for the Thai authorities, and not pompous expats who think they are better off ( or just plain better) than others.    What's wrong with just minding one's own business?

Not the case in all countries. (To put it mildly). 

 

Certainly not true at all in the US. 

 

And it seems now that for UK retirees, while they might be able to go back they would not be able to bring their Thai spouse.  And UK retirees are disproportionate among those living in Thailand without adequate funds...frozen old age pension and  unfavorable changes in exchange rate have hit hard.

I used an agent because the queue and the wait time were less. That and the 1/4" of paperwork.

Just during covid years i invested more into my equity funds than your 10 years savings. Then there's the other 45 years i've been alive 555

 

Debt free house sale after covid. Not a small house either.

Being an expat and an economic migrant are not mutually exclusive.
